Activision apparently plans to release the free-to-play battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone for mobile devices as well. This is revealed by a recently surfaced job posting on the publisher’s website. But why? Actually, there already is Call of Duty: Mobile with battle royale.
Where does the info come from? The information about the new mobile project of Call of Duty comes from a job posting on Activision’s homepage. Although it has since been removed, it has been captured in numerous screenshots.
This is what the job posting reveals
This supports Warzone Mobile: They are looking for an Executive Producer, essentially a project manager, for “WZM”.
This apparently stands for Warzone Mobile. Because although it initially still broadly describes it as a “new AAA mobile FPS in the ‘Call of Duty’ franchise”, it becomes very specific later in the posting, mentioning “Warzone Mobile”: “…serves as the primary point of contact on the leadership team of Warzone Mobile…”
It is definitively clear what the new mobile FPS is about.
What else does the posting say? There are several core competencies and responsibilities outlined that already provide initial clues as to which direction they want to take with Warzone Mobile.
It also states, among other things:
- collecting, adapting, and implementing essential features from Warzone on consoles and PC into their best mobile form.
- The responsible person must learn to adapt Warzone to a mobile experience and must understand which aspects of the mode need to be included in the mobile version.
- The responsible person is expected to further improve the Warzone formula by proposing and developing mobile-specific additions and changes to features, in order to provide the best mobile experience in this segment.
Is there a date? No, there is no date for Warzone Mobile yet. A job posting is also not a 100% guarantee that it will actually be released, as the project could theoretically still be canceled.
Who is developing Warzone Mobile? That is also not known yet. However, it is conceivable that Tencent Games will also be involved, as they participated in Call of Duty: Mobile.
But Call of Duty Mobile already has a battle royale…
Will Warzone Mobile be its own game? Currently, that is not known. However, it is quite conceivable that Call of Duty intends to copy the Fortnite model and make Warzone playable cross-platform.
However, the details included in the job posting also allow for the possibility that it could be a standalone mobile adaptation, which may be based on and inspired by Warzone on PC and consoles, but cannot be played together with the other platforms – thus a purely mobile experience.
What about the battle royale of Call of Duty: Mobile? Logically, this would argue against a purely mobile reorientation, as Call of Duty already has a free-to-play mobile spin-off that also features its own battle royale. This would effectively create competition against itself and its successful product.
Tendentially, Call of Duty seems to be leaning towards Warzone Mobile in the direction of Fortnite and expanding the popular battle royale mode to new platforms. Especially since it is expected to run for a long time between various CoD titles. However, this is currently pure speculation.
Why Warzone Mobile at all? The reason is likely money, as it often is. High-quality mobile games are already performing very well in many countries, but this market is far from saturated and offers enormous potential and opportunities.
Warzone Mobile could help open up new markets and further expand existing ones, strengthening Activision’s position there. Particularly in India and China, where not everyone has a gaming PC, but almost everyone has a smartphone and where mobile gaming is flourishing, a title like Warzone Mobile could be financially very promising.
What do you think of a Warzone Mobile? Would it be interesting for you to be able to enjoy the existing Warzone experience on the go? Would you try it if Warzone Mobile were only playable between smartphones?
By the way, this is likely how things will proceed with Warzone on PC and consoles in the near future: CoD MW, Warzone Season 6: Is there even a new season? That is still unknown
