In 2012, the MMORPG TERA was released and has been continuously expanded since then. However, in 2020, the game ramped up again and introduced already 3 major updates. We took a closer look at TERA and tell you whether it is worth it.
What kind of game is this? The Asia MMORPG TERA has been impressing since its release with its action-packed combat system, allowing you to defeat huge bosses and experience varied dungeons. With 7 different races and 13 classes, there is something for every type of player.
TERA has been Free2Play since 2013 and belongs to the free games that we can recommend to you from MeinMMO in 2020. This is also due to the fact that the MMORPG regularly receives updates.
In 2020, there were already numerous events and 3 major content patches that provided new tasks in TERA. But is it enough to make the game interesting again?
New Dungeons, New Equipment, New Story
What did the latest updates bring? At the end of 2019, a major patch was released that significantly revamped the endgame. This included a continent with new zones, quests, items, and bosses.
In February 2020, TERA received the “Crescent Sea” update. It brought the MMORPG:
- The dungeon “Sea of Honor” for level 65 characters.
- A new token system for guild quests that brought new reward boxes.
- An unlocking of the Valkyrie class for the Elin.
Around a month later, on March 10, the next update “Kaia’s Anvil” was released. This in turn provided:
- Completely new equipment, the Mythic Gear.
- 2 additional dungeons.
- A continuation of the Exodor storyline.
The third update was released on April 28 and brought many balance changes to all classes. Another new feature was the overhaul of the loot boxes.
Now, the new boxes indicate the probability of getting a respective item. This adjustment is likely to be gradually introduced to the other loot boxes as well.
What else is happening in TERA? Regularly, there are events in the MMORPG. There are additional rewards such as boosts for XP and loot or even special event quests like on Valentine’s Day or the Lunar New Year.
In May, TERA also celebrates its eighth anniversary and brings many more events into the game, which largely cater to veterans:
- From April 30 to May 28 – Collect elemental cores for valuable rewards.
- From May 5 to June 9 – Event dungeon: The Abscess.
- From May 12 to June 2 – Guardian’s Contest, where you can earn badges and exchange them for special rewards.
- From May 14 to May 19 – Double loot and double gold in Vanguard Initiative quests.
- From May 23 to May 24 – Double chance for card fragments
- From May 28 to June 2 – Guardian missions with bonus rewards for each box.

Is TERA worth it in 2020?
Is TERA still populated? Although TERA received many updates, was it enough to attract players?
On Steam, the MMORPG is currently enjoying greater popularity again and is among the MMORPGs that have gained a lot of players in recent weeks.
In the last 30 days, an average of 1,282 players played TERA via Steam. At peak, there were 2,469 concurrent players. The last time the MMORPG had such good numbers was in 2018 (via Steamcharts).
However, many players also use the standalone client outside of Steam. Additionally, TERA is also available on PS4 and Xbox One. Therefore, a precise statement about the player count cannot be made.
In a self-test, at least the capitals and starting areas were well populated on May 2.
What do players say about TERA? On Steam, the MMORPG received 252 reviews in the last 30 days, of which 85% were positive. The comments praised the class variety, the diverse dungeons, and the combat system.
Criticism was directed at boring quests, an outdated and RNG-based equipment system, and a lot of grind to obtain endgame equipment.
For whom is TERA worth it? Anyone looking for an action-packed MMORPG that tells a beautiful story, offers exciting boss battles, and includes tons of content should definitely check out TERA.
The MMORPG is particularly suitable for console players, as the controller controls are intuitive and quick to learn, despite the action.
However, disadvantages include the gender lock on some classes, as well as the very monotonous quests and the equipment system that heavily relies on RNG. Additionally, one should have no issues with a lot of bare skin, a “child race,” and crazy costumes that can disrupt the immersion of the role-playing game.
