The action MMO Pagan Online will soon be Pagan Offline. Because publisher Wargaming is parting ways with developer Mad Head and they want to continue running the game offline from August onwards. What this means for the players, you will learn here at MeinMMO.
What is Pagan Online? Pagan Online is an old-school action MMO set in a fantasy version of pagan Eastern Europe. In Diablo style, you slay your way through monsters from Slavic mythology with predefined heroes. The game is developed by the Serbian studio Mad Head Games. Wargaming has been the publisher so far and was responsible for multiplayer marketing.
What happened? Although Pagan Online was able to please fans at launch – among others our MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus had fun with it – the long-term motivation of the players was lacking. There were fewer and fewer updates, and since December 2019, nothing had really happened. This now has consequences.
As only about 20 people were online on Steam last time, and playing over the Wargaming launcher didn’t seem particularly rosy either, Wargaming and Mad Head Games parted ways again. This is the end of Pagan Online.
Pagan Offline – Here’s What’s Next
Is the game dead now? As already mentioned, the “Online” in “Pagan Online” will soon be history. As of August 4, 2020, the game will no longer be published by Wargaming and will be removed from the Wargaming launcher portfolio.
However, the game will continue on Steam and will be distributed directly by the developer. This also means that Pagan Online will no longer be an MMO, but rather a pure single-player game. So basically “Pagan Offline”.
What happens if I played it via Wargaming? Wargaming offers you the possibility to transfer your progress to the Steam version. Additionally, you will receive a small farewell gift from Wargaming in any case:
- 7 days of premium playtime that you can use for the games World of Tanks, Warships, Warplanes, and World of Tanks Blitz.
- A premium tier-3 vehicle for each of these games. That would be one MTLGS-1G14 (Tanks), the Dreadnought (Warships), the Boeing YP-29 (Warplanes), and the M2 Medium for Blitz.
Will I get my money back? No, refunds are excluded. You currently cannot make any in-game purchases anymore.
What’s next for Pagan? Despite the transition, the developers stated that they have no further future plans for the game. However, they could definitely bring something new if the game does well as a single-player title.
How is the community reacting? Since it became known that Pagan Online is going offline, the reviews on Steam have plummeted. The game has received a “very negative” rating in recent times. Only 4 out of 49 reviews in the last 30 days were positive.
Players mostly feel cheated and deceived, as they bought an online game. Especially the fact that they are not getting refunds angers many former fans. Whether Pagan will succeed as an offline game is doubtful given this frustration.
Pagan Online was once considered a potential competitor to Blizzard’s upcoming action RPG Diablo 4. That seems to be over now. But if you continue to search for meaningful Diablo alternatives, you might find a nice game that is like Diablo here on MeinMMO.
