How exactly did we proceed in the evaluation of the top games?
First, we included the MMORPGs from our database and some with large German communities into a list: This included online role-playing games like Ragnarok, Maple Story, Tibia, Runescape, Everquest 2, or Silkroad Online. It was about 35 currently playable MMORPGs. In the end, we wanted to present the 15 most popular.
We used the tool Keywordtool.io to extract the average search volume for the last 12 months. For example, there were 74,000 searches in one month for the keyword “World of Warcraft” or 22,000 for “Black Desert.” The game names served as keywords here. However, this approach has one disadvantage.
Because the queries only apply to that term. For this reason, we used Google Trends as the decisive platform, as it behaves much more “intelligently” here.
Google reveals, through trend analysis, how high the interest over a certain time period was for a particular topic and which search queries were made regarding it in various countries. In addition, related search queries are included, making it possible to consider entire topic complexes (in this case over the category “video game”).
On July 3, 2019, we had 20 games compete against each other in Google Trends, filtered out using the previously mentioned methods. The advantage here was that the tool analyzes the whole complex. This means that synonyms, abbreviations, and all related search queries are included in the analysis.
This even includes search queries where you searched for news about the game, wanted to visit the official site via Google, or researched for download or purchase. This means that it goes far beyond the mere “guide or game search.”
In Google Trends itself, we set the parameters to average the results in Germany for the last 12 months. It was important that each game is not only added as a search term but also as a topic complex, in this case, “video game.”
Thus, in the end, we arrived at the 15 games that we have presented to you in this article.
