Manufacturers today have to come up with something special to make their advertising stand out from the crowd. The team behind the mobile game Nikke has gone overboard and produced a spot that leaves even Asmongold, the top nerd from Twitch, speechless.
What kind of advertisement was that? On January 11, 2023, the Thai website of the Korean mobile game Goddess of Victory: NIKKE published a one-and-a-half-minute commercial that caused quite a stir.
The spot features a clichéd depiction of a nerd: an overweight young man with thick glasses, who prefers sitting indoors playing games instead of attending his own birthday party outside.
The main character then opens the game on his phone and becomes sexually aroused by the anime girls appearing in it. As he blows out the candles on his birthday cake, he imagines being pampered by 3 game characters brought to life.
A clip of Asmongold’s astonished reaction, which we are embedding here, also shows the original commercial. The ad itself has since been removed, and re-uploads on YouTube received copyright strikes or were deleted for violating the ToS.
Asmongold: They know their target audience
How does Asmongold react to the advertisement? He initially seemed impressed: The creators made no secret of who plays their game and what their target audience looks like.
Then the clip takes an increasingly absurd turn, and the streamer can hardly believe what he sees: that can never be a real advertisement. In fact, there are times when Asmongold just sits there with his mouth agape, taking it all in.
Players protest against unfavorable representation
Was the advertisement even real? Indeed, the clip was a genuine advertisement in Thailand – and it caused quite an uproar.
According to a reddit user, the advertisement received so much criticism from upset players that it vanished from the official site within an hour, and an apology was posted (via reddit).
On the Thai Facebook page of Nikke, it states that they apologize for the lack of care in depicting the content and will use players’ suggestions to improve (via Facebook).
What bothered the players? Apparently, they were dissatisfied with their portrayal in the ad; they felt mocked and insulted by the manufacturers. Furthermore, the advertisement was said to be excessively sexualized, which some even found disgusting, writes the reddit user.
