A user tells how they found a game 26 times at their grandma’s house. No one knows why, but the grandson or granddaughter suspects that the grandmother didn’t know how to delete the save game.
Someone on Reddit discovered a strange find. At their deceased grandmother’s house, they found 26 copies of Wario Land 4 and 13 copies of Mario Pinball Land. As if that weren’t strange enough, there are also 20 Game Boy Advance handhelds. The person writes:
My grandmother’s game collection. We are not sure if she knew how to overwrite existing game files.
The community is surprised by the find. The person themselves wrote that they suspect the grandmother didn’t know how to overwrite old save files. However, this doesn’t explain why she bought 20 Nintendo handhelds.
A really satisfactory answer cannot be given by the user either. When asked why the grandmother has so many versions of Wario Land 4, they explain that the grandmother also printed out websites and had thoroughly explained the games to her grandchildren (via reddit.com):
No idea. She also printed out a number of tutorials from online websites and left messages for her grandchildren explaining the games.
What is the game worth today? On eBay, you can buy Wario Land 4 for between 20 and 25 euros. So it’s not a game that fetches 1,000 euros today. There are always collectors who invest a lot of money in old games, but Wario Land 4 probably isn’t one of them.
For Mario Pinball Land, the situation on the second-hand market is not better. Here too, prices on eBay range between 30 and 40 euros, with some absurd offers over 100 euros.
On old consoles, the save data was stored on the cartridge and could not be deleted directly
In Game Boy games and other consoles, the save game is typically saved in the memory of the game cartridge and not in the system memory of the Game Boy. Only with the Nintendo Switch are save files stored in the system memory of the Switch, allowing you to use the game on another console without having to overwrite your beloved save file.
In some cases, there is also no menu item through which you can directly delete the old save file. In Pokémon: FireRed Edition, for example, you have to press a specific button combination to delete the save file.
Why won’t my Game Boy game save anymore? In some cases, a Game Boy game will no longer save game data. This is usually due to the battery inside, which is probably dead. A dead battery is either noticeable through an error message or by the fact that your game is no longer saving.
