Jewelry is one of the most important items in World of Warcraft. They often significantly contribute to your character’s performance. One that you can get quite early, experts initially considered rather weak. Now it turns out: there’s more to it.
What kind of jewelry is this? The Ruby Whelpling Shell is a reward that you can obtain while questing at the Coastal Awakening or as loot in the Ruby Life Pools.
When you wear the shell, you gain a little of your primary attribute (Intellect, Strength, or Agility) permanently, as well as the chance to summon a whelpling. This whelpling assists you with various abilities in combat:
- it attacks enemies individually or via area attack
- it heals you or your group
- it provides you with haste or critical strike rating
Compared to other pieces of jewelry, the shell performs rather poorly. On websites like Bloodmallet, which are often used by hardcore players, the Ruby Whelpling Shell ranked low among many classes. This is slowly changing.
Because the jewelry has an active effect: if you use it, you can summon the whelpling once a day so it can learn from you. Many considered this effect just a cosmetic gimmick. However, it actually has a benefit.
The Ruby Life Pools is one of the 8 dungeons from Season 1 in Dragonflight, accordingly, you can obtain the jewelry at high levels. In the video, you can see the most popular dungeons from Season 1:
The jewelry becomes stronger as you teach the whelpling tricks
How do I train the jewelry? When you use the Ruby Whelpling Shell, you “train” your whelpling. Depending on which target you are aiming for, you enhance one of the whelpling’s areas of expertise, as wowhead found out:
- Fireball on a target: Aim at a single enemy
- AoE spell: Aim at an enemy fire elemental or area training dummies in Valdrakken
- Critical strike rating: Aim at yourself, nothing, or a pet
- Haste rating: Aim at a friendly target
- AoE healing: Aim at a bird companion of the Shikaar hunters or an AoE healing dummy in Valdrakken
- Single-target healing: Aim at the lower of the two fire particles in the tavern in Valdrakken
The experts from wowhead are currently still gathering data on how training can continue precisely and what the effects are, but they are dependent on help. After 7 days, the whelpling should specialize in one of the corresponding areas.
The likelihood that it will then use the corresponding effect is significantly increased and even stronger. However, the respective other effect in the same area (damage, buff, healing) is still possible, although less likely.
You can probably retrain the whelpling at any time, but you will have to spend the days training again. You can check how far your whelpling has been trained in which field with the following command:
How powerful will the jewelry be then? According to wowhead, the Ruby Whelpling Shell, when fully upgraded, can compete with some of the strongest pieces of jewelry – such as the Manic Mourning Torch, one of the strongest items for certain classes.
The buff for critical strike rating is among the strongest available for all pieces of jewelry. However, precise values are still missing the data.
