What is currently happening in EVE Online? The large alliance Legacy has officially declared war over Twitter. At the moment, alongside Legacy, the coalitions The Imperium and PanFam control a large part of the so-called nullsec space, where there are no protective mechanisms against player attacks.
At this time, we believe it is in the interest of both parties that the mutual ceasefire ends. Due to the conflict you are currently involved in and our past of cooperation and friendship, I propose that the ceasefire ends on July 5th, to allow you to reinforce your borders and territories where you see it fit. The ceasefire between the alliances ends on July 5th. As it stands, it primarily concerns the fight between Legacy and The Imperium. PanFam seems to be joining Legacy.
What happens next? The parties are preparing for war. Not only are ships being produced, but propaganda is also being deployed to encourage as many EVE Online players as possible to join the conflict on one side.
Meanwhile, the logos of the two warring factions keep appearing – the dinosaur for Legacy and the bee for The Imperium, which is why the conflict has already been dubbed “World War Bee 2,” in reference to the “World War Bee” war from 2016.
The EVE Online community is very curious about how the war will unfold. There has only been such a confrontation, albeit not on this scale.
Interview with EVE player Pandoralica
We were able to speak with the well-known EVE Online player Pandoralica, also known as Pando, about this.
MeinMMO: Could you briefly explain who you are and where you stand in the upcoming possible conflict?
Pandoralica: In the game, I am known as Pando and I lead fleets for the alliance “The Initiative.” The coalitions Legacy and PanFam will start a war against The Imperium on July 5th, and since INIT (The Initiative) is part of the Imperium, I will stand on the side of the defenders.
MeinMMO: How did it come about that the non-aggression pact was dissolved right now?
Pando: Since the agreement has been on shaky ground for quite some time, it was to be expected that it would eventually dissolve in one way or another. Of course, a significant factor is that the attackers feel strong enough to win the war they are starting. In wars like this, it naturally depends on the number of ships you can bring to the battlefield. With the merger of Legacy and PanFam, the numbers suggest a 2:1 advantage for the attackers, at least on paper – possibly even more.
MeinMMO: Do you think this is a necessary/correct step? Why or why not?
Pando: I never thought much of the non-aggression pact, so I see its dissolution as necessary. However, it is somewhat cowardly of Legacy to not simply start a war, but to ally with those they recently had to save from, which is how this pact originally came to be.
MeinMMO: Is a war approaching in EVE, or is this just saber-rattling?
Pando: Too many people have announced too much greatness and now doing nothing would damage their reputation too much. Reputation plays a significant role in EVE. The war cannot be avoided anymore, and the scale we are talking about will likely make every past war look small.
MeinMMO: If it comes to war: How much money (in €) do you estimate will be spent? EVE is known for having quite expensive battles.
Pando: Before I answer that, I would like to explain where this € calculation in EVE actually comes from. While there are isolated players who invest a lot of real money, that is more the exception. When talking about a €10,000 battle, there is often this misconception that it involves ships that were bought directly with euros.
You can buy game time for euros and you can sell game time for ISK (in-game currency), and the conversion serves only to give outsiders an idea of how much time and effort players have invested but are also willing to risk. To answer the question: The war in total will certainly cost several hundred thousand “euros” in terms of ships and may even break the million mark. 1,143,231.39 € is my estimate!
