The Day Before was once the great survival hope on Steam. Just a few days after release, the studio behind it announced its closure. Other developers seized the opportunity to celebrate their own success.
This is the situation around The Day Before: After some setbacks, the once great survival hope on Steam finally celebrated its release in Early Access on December 7, 2023. Just a few days later, the developer Fntastic announced its closure, stating they had miscalculated.
Promptly, the old saying “Those who suffer damage don’t have to worry about the mockery” proves true. Not only players criticize The Day Before, but also the competition gets involved.
Until the end, The Day Before tried to entice players with trailers:
Studio behind The Day Before says: ‘Tough luck’
What do other developers say? Just a few hours after the news from Fntastic, the developer of the survival game DayZ published its own statement, seemingly taking aim at the failed competition. The structure resembles the announcement of The Day Before, but the content could hardly be more different.
DayZ is celebrating its 10th anniversary – ‘for no particular reason,’ as stated in the post. The survival shooter had a difficult start itself, but has recently achieved new player records on Steam.
While Fntastic apologizes, Bohemia Interactive thanks the community for their support. DayZ’s timeline ends with a proud: ’10 years and still unbeatable.’
You can find the post marked with sarcasm here:
The developers of the survival MMO Rust, which also launched in December 2013, make a joke as well. Instead of writing a parody themselves, the responsible parties simply took DayZ’s post and edited it with a red marker (via X).
In the comments, the studios are celebrated for their jab at The Day Before. Although there hasn’t been a response from Fntastic yet, the studio seems to want to maintain composure amid the situation.
In response to a comment from an angry user, the studio dryly states: ‘That was our first big experience. Tough luck.’
Given the disappointment of many players, Fntastic has already announced that everyone will get their money back. You can find out how it works from the colleagues at GamePro.
MeinMMO author Britta was there right at the release of The Day Before and documented her experiences in a preview report. However, her hopes for an exciting survival experience were quickly dashed. You can read about her experience here:
