Legendary weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3 speak for themselves with their legendary classification, indicating that they can be particularly powerful. One of these weapons can be found in the first act of the game, but one of its properties may become your downfall much later.
Which weapon is being discussed? It is the “Blood of Lathander,” a legendary mace that you can acquire in the first act of the game in the Monastery of Rosemoor in the Githyanki Cradle. It is directly connected to its namesake Lathander, the “Morninglord,” and the sunrise. Accordingly, the Blood of Lathander possesses fitting properties such as the powerful level 6 spell “Sunbeam,” Lathander’s Blessing, and Lathander’s Light – a sacred light that illuminates a 6-meter radius around the bearer and blinds targets.
This very light can be advantageous in combat against certain foes, but it can also have the opposite effect. For while the light does nothing to most NPCs, it can bring about unfortunate consequences in the wrong moment in the wrong place.

Sunlight is not good for everyone
Spoiler warning! The following sections describe situations, characters, and personal story elements from Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3.
What are the consequences of the Blood of Lathander? The player Mister_Sosotris warns with a Reddit post about an (involuntary) situation involving the Blood of Lathander, which his Shadowheart had equipped. His party ventured into a brothel in the Wyrmway, directly across from Sharess’ Caress, and explored the rooms. In a room with several beds, there are two characters who later turned out to be vampire spawn and Astarion’s “siblings.” But before the appropriate cutscene could start, Shadowheart with Lathander’s Light got a little too close – and the two vampire siblings disintegrated. Before they could say a word.
Apparently, he is not the only one this has happened to. Many other players share their own experience with this situation in the comments, with many not knowing the exact reason for the sudden disappearance of the two vampires.
Where can the weapon cause more unrest? The situation clearly shows what the weapon is particularly suited for. For vampires, as well as the vampire lord Cazador, are very sensitive to sunlight. The Blood of Lathander can therefore be particularly effective and advantageous in combat against him and his followers. However, anyone wanting to show mercy and ensuring that his vampire spawn (including children) are released should perhaps be cautious about dimming Lathander’s Light a bit when leaving the estate.
Those who are not careful and encounter the Gur folks along with their vampire children in full holy radiance after the battle against Cazador … will quickly realize that children cannot endure much, whether spawn or not. And their parents do not appreciate that at all.
But there is good news. One can have the Blood of Lathander equipped and still turn off Lathander’s Light. This way, you can save all vampires in Baldur’s Gate from a fiery death.
Cazador is an important part of Astarion’s story, your party’s beloved vampire companion. His encounter with the vampire lord presents you with a crucial decision that significantly influences the character development of the companion and the corresponding ending.
