In League of Legends the so-called Lane Swaps
have been dominating eSports for months. However, despite the popularity and success of the strategy, it is not particularly favored by many viewers and some professionals. Riot is looking to address this and is announcing massive changes.
What are Lane Swaps? Lane Swap is a strategy that has regularly been part of the meta in various seasons of LoL.
The tactic involves the bot lane, consisting of 2 champions, swapping with the top or mid laner. This can be done to counter a strong early-game champion or to allow the ADC to earn good gold when they can quickly clear waves and thus take towers quickly.
This strategy has been quite successful in recent months, but not everyone likes it. Many viewers find Lane Swaps boring because they focus less on fights in the lanes and more on efficiently generating gold.
Many professionals, especially top laners, are also not big fans of this meta because they feel it undermines their role: the top lane is not supposed to carry; it is supposed to be perfect for lane swaps.
That’s why champions like K’Sante are so popular in eSports; he can play well against 2 people.
However, the dominance of the strategy seems to be waning as Riot announces massive changes that will significantly weaken lane swaps.
Lane Swaps will be less rewarding
What changes are being made? Matt Leung-Harrinson, the lead gameplay designer of LoL, announced on x.com some changes that are currently being tested on the PBE, the test server of LoL:
- The game will recognize when a lane swap occurs as soon as 2 champions without a jungle item are on the mid or top lane
- If the lane swap is detected, the front towers will receive:
- 95% damage reduction
- Towers will kill minions with one shot
- Champions defending the lane swap will receive XP and gold from kills obtained by their own tower or their own minions
- Champions making the lane swap will receive 50% less XP and gold from minions
- Only Top Lane: Defending towers will kill champions with one shot
- Only Top Lane: Defending champions receive 50% damage reduction under their own tower
With these changes, the early lane swap will become virtually irrelevant because players will earn less gold, and it will be significantly harder to apply pressure. On the top lane, it will almost no longer be possible.
Leung-Harrinson notes that these changes are only temporary, as they wish to find a more elegant solution
for lane swaps. One of the reasons for the change is that viewers and professional players have expressed negative opinions about lane swaps because they want to see top laners play against top laners and bot lanes against bot lanes.
How is this being discussed? In the comments on X, three trends are visible:
- Some are very welcoming of this.
- Others say that lane swapping is not a problem that needs to be solved mechanically. In normal games, lane swaps are not an issue. They could simply implement a rule for esports to prevent lane swapping.
- Thirdly, some see weaknesses in the system and believe there could be problems when a support wants to help their top laner.
Will these changes alter the meta? In normal games, this will be less noticeable because lane swaps rarely happen so early in the game.
In eSports, however, this is likely to cause changes. Especially the choice of bot lane and top lane may change, as players will need to play a classic match-up in the first minutes.
