Magic: The Gathering, the famous trading card game, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Wizards of the Coast is releasing a special edition for this occasion. However, many fans of the franchise are outraged because: For 60 cards, one has to spend around €1,000 – in their opinion, the price is far too high.
In 1993, Wizards of the Coast released the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. In the meantime, it can also be played digitally and is very popular worldwide.
On the occasion of the upcoming 30th anniversary the game’s publishers announced a special product, the: “Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition”. However, players have to spend around €1,000 for 60 random cards from the special edition; this is too expensive for many fans. Accordingly, the reactions from the community were quite negative.
“For $1,000, I can buy a very good printer”
What does the Magic community say about the special edition? On reddit, many users complain about the high price of the cards. Sandman1278 states: “I thought it [the edition] was good. Then they announced the $999 price, sheesh.”
Also, under a Twitter post from the official Magic: The Gathering channel about the 30th anniversary, negative comments from the community are pouring in. @The_Milkmann claims: “$1,000 for Proxys is absolutely ridiculous” and @Starlight_Witch asks: “Why is it more expensive to produce Proxys than legal cards?”
So-called proxy cards merely represent “real” Magic cards. The term is also used for self-made copies. They are not allowed in tournaments and therefore have more of a collector’s value rather than a real use in competitive matches.
The community seems primarily bothered by the very high price for Proxys. Because instead of the original well-known Magic cards, such as the legendary “Black Lotus”, the set consists of retro cards that are not allowed in tournaments. For hardcore fans, they are therefore nearly useless.

Some users also joke that instead of the cards, they could simply buy a very good printer for €1,000 to make their own Proxys.
What does the special edition look like? Each box contains 4 packs with 15 random cards from the 30th Anniversary Edition. The cards feature old artworks, which have now been re-released in combination with a modern design.
In the gallery of Magic: The Gathering, you can view all the cards from the special edition.
When does the sale of the special edition start? Starting November 28, 2022, the “Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition” will be sold on the website 30thEdition.wizards.com. Buyers from North America will likely receive the cards this year, while buyers from other regions will probably have to wait until early 2023.
