A screenwriter of the movies for The Lord of the Rings admitted in an interview that she has not yet seen the Amazon series The Rings of Power. You can find out why on MeinMMO.
Who is it about? Philippa Boyens was one of the screenwriters for the film trilogies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Alongside Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, she significantly contributed to the films.
Philippa Boyens is not involved in Amazon’s The Rings of Power. Moreover, she has not watched the series at all. She admitted this in an interview with Empire Magazine (via SlashFilm).
I haven’t seen it, and I have done that deliberately because I don’t intend to judge someone else’s attempt to return to this world.
Screenwriter does not want to be influenced
Boyens explains that Tolkien created a complex world, which makes adaptive storytelling a challenge. Later in the interview, she mentions another reason why she prefers to stay away from The Rings of Power – at least for now.
Boyens does not want there to be a “cross-contamination” between her works and The Rings of Power. She first needs to have closure with Middle-earth before she can look at someone else’s adaptation. One day, she hopes, this will be the case. Currently, she is working on three new films in the fantasy universe:
- The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim takes place 200 years before The Lord of the Rings and is an anime film.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is a planned live-action film, not much is known about it yet. How the film fits into the timeline is already established.
- In an interview with Empire Magazine, Boyens confirms that another, currently unannounced live-action film is in the works.
