Superman is primarily known as a family-friendly hero, but in the new movie, he must face a nasty villain. Lex Luthor was supposed to be even nastier, but a wicked scene didn’t make it into the film.

One of the biggest highlights in the new Superman movie is Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult. He portrays the narcissistic and fanatical supervillain in a unique way and repeatedly shows that he is ruthless and brutal. Very different from another Superman villain.
But as is typically the case, not all scenes make it into a film. Some filmed sequences are cut because they do not fit the pace, length, or tone of the movie. As James Gunn confirmed in a podcast, a brutal scene with Lex Luthor did not make it into the film.
One scene was even too brutal for Lex Luthor
What happened in the scene? In the film, Lex Luthor uses nasty tricks to capture Superman and trap him in his pocket universe. During a visit from Lex and the President of Boravia, Vasil Ghurkos, he wants to interrogate Superman. During this, he ends up shooting an innocent person. Ghurkos finds this amusing as well.
Originally, the scene was supposed to go a bit further. In the podcast Happy Sad Confused (via YouTube), host Josh Horowitz spoke with James Gunn about scenes that didn’t make it into the film. This included the continuation of the interrogation scene, which was a really dark thing
for James Gunn.
Due to the shot, blood was supposed to flow on the platform where Lex and Vasil were standing. However, Lex didn’t like that because his shoes might get dirty. So, he told Vasil to soak up the blood. Vasil would have then shockingly replied No
, but this would not have suited the villain at all. Arrogantly, he would have repeated questioningly: No?
. Terrified, Vasil would have then laid back to soak up the blood with his suit.
Subsequently, Gunn explains that this is a scene that was filmed but did not make it into the movie. Even during test screenings, the scene did not make it.
Even though the scene is quite dark, it would have shown Lex Luthor at his best
. The lives of others do not matter to him, and he sees himself as superior.
