Currently, AMD and Intel dominate the market for processors. Now a Russian company has introduced several processors – but what can they actually do?
Anyone looking to buy a processor for their gaming PC will hardly find a way around AMD and Intel. These two manufacturers produce most of the chips that users buy. On Amazon, AMD dominates the sales figures, while Intel has now released the latest generation of processors.
However, a Russian company has now introduced a set of processors aimed not only at professional clients but also general consumers like gamers. While the server CPUs are primarily intended for large customers, they also have something for gamers in their portfolio.
But what can the Baikal-M actually do and can it really be an alternative to AMD and Intel? MeinMMO has taken a look at the processors.
ARM architecture is the basis for the Russian processor
Which company is behind the processors? The Russian company “Baikal Electronics” manufactures the processors that operate under the name “Baikal.” Baikal Electronics is part of the Russian company “T-Platforms,” which specializes mainly in supercomputers for states and universities.
What kind of processor is this? Inside the processor, the architecture of the British chip manufacturer ARM is used. These are primarily employed in mobile devices so far. For the development of the processor, the Russian government provided a two-digit million amount (via winfuture.de).
The processor itself is an 8-core with 8 ARMv8 cores and an integrated graphics unit. In manufacturing, Baikal Electronics relies on 28-nanometer production. The CPU supports 32 GB of RAM and delivers a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz.
How fast is the processor? According to the benchmark table provided by the manufacturer, the Baikal-M should achieve 1542 points in the Geekbench multicore test (via baikalelectronics.com).
In comparison to AMD’s popular Ryzen 5 3600, this is not very much, as the CPU reaches 6667 points in the multicore test. AMD’s entry-level processor with a dedicated graphics chip, the Ryzen 3 3200G, achieves 2829 points, which is still double that of the Baikal-M.
If these numbers are taken as performance values, then the Baikal-M is unlikely to be a real competitor for AMD. And so far, it is also unclear whether the processor will even be available in Germany.

Will the processors come to Germany?
Can the processor be purchased anywhere? It is still unclear whether the processors will actually make it to Europe. At least the manufacturer has stated that they want to produce 10,000 to 15,000 processors every month (via gizchina.com).
But that doesn’t mean they will be coming to us any time soon. According to previous sources, the first batches of processors are primarily intended for state authorities and schools. The source cited by Winfuture mentions they want to become independent of the large American chip manufacturers.
Not only in the processor market is there a lot of movement. Another manufacturer has introduced new graphics cards, which, however, do not come from AMD or Nvidia. Now some gamers hope that a cheap alternative might appear soon.
