The Witcher 4 is highly anticipated by fans. At CD Projekt Red, some veterans of the series are working on the new installment. One of them has been involved since the very beginning.
What is the status of The Witcher 4? The successor to the now nearly 10-year-old predecessor was announced at the Game Awards 2024. Even the first long trailer caused a stir. Not least because part 4 puts Geralt’s adopted daughter Ciri in the spotlight.
In the trailer, she appears as a witcher and fights against a terrifying creature. The developers have emphasized that they are committed to the lore of the original and do not want to deviate significantly from it. The main responsibility for this lies with those employees at CD Projekt Red who are in charge of the story.
However, some fans fear that the series could develop in a new direction ten years after Witcher 3. User Syarofi_ibn_Zamah asks on x.com: “Will the dark atmosphere of the series be influenced by newly hired writers?”
To this question, the CEO of CD Projekt Red can provide a clear answer.
Real veterans are taking care of the new installment
What does the CEO say? The CEO of CD Projekt Red, Michał Nowakowski, revealed on x.com that many veterans are involved in part 4. Among them is a developer who was already part of Witcher 3, 2, and even the first installment of the series.
He is in charge of the story and has been ensuring that it is told consistently and logically since part 1. Both the CEO and his co-CEO Adam Badowski have been at CD Projekt Red for over 20 years and oversee the work on the Witcher games.
But the studio is not only relying on experienced developers for the story front. According to Nowakowski, around 100 people who worked on Witcher 3 are still part of CD Projekt Red. Many of them are also involved in the development of part 4.
Given that about 200 people worked on Witcher 3, impressively few developers have left the company in the past ten years.
At least regarding story and lore, the studio is relying on experienced people. This may ease some fans’ concerns a little. Nevertheless, new talents are also given their chance and were already able to design a practice quest about two years ago: A quest in Witcher 3 exists only because the developers wanted to prepare new employees for part 4
