A Netflix change has recently been implemented in Canada. A subscription model could soon be dropped in Germany as well, which would affect some viewers significantly.
Netflix is continually testing new changes to its subscription models. For instance, the basic subscription was recently eliminated in Canada.
This could also be in store for German Netflix users. Especially those who use the platform alone would face a major disadvantage due to the change.

Is the elimination of the basic subscription also looming in Germany?
Which subscription is it about? The change in Canada affects the basic subscription for 9.99 Canadian dollars. Users can stream on one device at a time. So, if you use Netflix alone, the subscription works well.
If you want to watch Netflix on 2 devices simultaneously, for instance, if you’re sharing the account with someone else, you need to upgrade to the standard subscription.

What subscriptions do we have available in Germany? When you subscribe to Netflix, currently four different models are available to you with varying monthly costs (via help.netflic.com, as of June 28, 2023):
- Standard subscription with ads: Watch on 2 devices simultaneously for €4.99
- Basic: Watch ad-free on 1 device at a time for €7.99
- Standard: Watch ad-free on 2 devices simultaneously for €12.99 (Additional member slots can be added for €4.99 each)
- Premium: Watch ad-free on 4 devices simultaneously for €17.99 (Additional member slots can be added for €4.99 each)

Will the basic subscription also be eliminated for us soon? So far, there is no official information from Netflix regarding whether this model will also be eliminated in Germany.
However, there are first signs that the change could also be coming our way. When you subscribe to Netflix, the basic subscription is only shown to you after an additional click; it’s somewhat hidden.
This suggests that the platform may not want to promote the model as much as the other three options and fewer people should choose it. Therefore, it is conceivable that Netflix may eventually remove the basic subscription completely from its program.
Furthermore, the standard subscription with ads was recently still called “Basic subscription with ads” (via Filmstarts). The name was thus adapted to the more expensive model. This also indicates a potential elimination of the basic model.
What would the elimination of the basic subscription mean? Netflix viewers who only watch on one device at a time would have to decide in the future whether they want to either choose the cheaper model (standard subscription with ads) and accept ad interruptions or pay €5 more monthly (standard subscription).
