Currently, the Steam Summer Sale is happening, and there are some great deals. Among them are some tips for fans of the Pokémon games. One particular game comes highly recommended by MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes, as he has spent countless hours in it.
What game is it? Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth is a classic JRPG set in the Digimon universe. You play as a detective or a hacker, depending on the game, who must find out why Digimon are appearing everywhere.
The focus of the game is primarily on capturing and breeding Digimon, and that is exactly what captivated me.

I feel like in Persona
Not only does the game visually resemble Persona, but also in its breeding mechanics. Unlike in Pokémon, you can’t just catch them; you can load Digimon after you’ve seen them enough times. The various Digimon can also evolve further.
This does not always happen based solely on level. The many Digimon have not just one possible evolution but several that are based on the Digimon’s stats. If you want to evolve your Digimon into a specific one, it requires the right values.
Exactly this aspect captivated me for hours. Like in Persona, I always wanted to have the strongest (or just coolest) monster for my teams. To achieve that, you have to breed the Digimon properly, revert their evolution, and train them. It was a really relaxing experience, especially with music or a podcast.
The gameplay contributes to this, as it has a very streamlined JRPG system. There are rounds, and in each round, you attack with three Digimon. To avoid the grind becoming too dull, there’s a button to speed everything up. Thus, it often became a nice relaxation in the evenings to level up and breed a few Digimon.
Perfect for Anime Fans
Anyone who is a fan of classic anime tropes will feel comfortable in the story and with the characters. None of this makes the game particularly unique, but it has been the perfect comfort snack. The music is also fantastic and fits well into the Persona vibe.
Admittedly, the dungeons are quite dull, but I never really saw that as a problem since the dungeons were usually very short, and with the right Digimon, you can avoid random encounters.
The game is perfect for those who are not averse to turn-based battles and for players who love building their team in such games. It is simply the perfect game if you want to relax with a podcast or video.
How much does the game cost? Until July 11, you can get the game on Steam for €8. The package includes both Cyber Sleuth games, which should keep you busy with just the main story for nearly 100 hours. If you interact more deeply with the games, you’ll easily hit double that.
