A player shows his controller, which he has been using on his Xbox for 10 years. And the community is surprised that the controller has held up until today.
A player posted a photo in a Reddit post, where you can see the thumbstick of his Xbox One controller. The picture shows that the stick is completely worn out. The plastic surface has lost a lot of material and is no longer black, but white from heavy use. He comments with the words: “Can you tell that I mostly played first-person shooters, where you run forward a lot?”
In another post, he adds that his controller has not yet experienced stick drift, a widespread issue like the one with the Switch. The problems are so extensive, that you can exchange your broken Joy-Cons for free at Nintendo. The user also added that so far only the A button on the controller sometimes triggers double:
And as far as I can tell, it has 0 drift. The only issue is that the A button sometimes double presses. But everything is still clicking and tight. I think the stick will break in half before the controller stops working at this point. It will outlast the console.
The consideration of cleaning the inside of the controller is rejected by him out of concern that the controller might not function afterwards and would let him down after 10 years.
Community is impressed that the controller has lasted so long
How does the community react? The community immediately sees in the post of his controller proof that he cannot be a camper. Because for that, the stick, with which you move, is way too worn out. Someone writes on Reddit:
At least we know you aren’t camping! That’s crazy, I should have looked at my sticks when I was younger during the COD4/GOW times.
Many explain that their own controller has never lasted that long. Sooner or later, stick drift has always been a problem and the controller was hardly usable. Another one adds that 10 years for a controller that is used daily is quite a long lifespan.
Under the post, however, many users also discuss whether everything was better in the past. But how much is there to this “things were better in the past” discussion actually?
Microsoft has continuously adapted its Xbox controller over the years
Basically, Microsoft has revised the controller for the Xbox One several times. Many adjustments have been well received by the community. The controller is said to have been slightly improved in haptics, grip, and features in later revisions. Later models, among other things, received Bluetooth support, a changed surface structure for more grip, and minor detail adjustments to housing and materials.
Subjectively, there are users who find early controllers more robust, but overall, the build quality of later revisions (starting from Xbox One S) is at least considered equivalent, often somewhat higher quality.
