In Baldur’s Gate 3, there is plenty of freedom, but also some nasty traps. Because during character creation, you not only have to create a hero, but also a Dream Guardian. Many recreate their own partner – but this leads to some very dramatic developments later in the game.
What happened? On the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, ScipioAtTheGate shared a short clip originally from a Funny subreddit. It features a young man who is currently playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and needs to create the “Dream Guardian” character. He chooses a woman with short black hair. After a quick cut, we see the person who was filming – the player’s girlfriend, who looks very similar.
It’s actually a nice gesture to choose the “dream woman,” meaning his own partner, as the Dream Guardian – but the community, which already knows the purpose of this character, sees it a bit differently.
What kind of character is this? The “Dream Guardian” is a character that you also have to create in the opening sequence of Baldur’s Gate 3 – after your actual game character is finished. At this point, the game doesn’t really reveal what the purpose of this second character is, but only vaguely hints that you need to care about this character in some way.
Thus, most players create a Dream Guardian that they perceive as pretty or heroic – and that’s exactly the trap set.
Because the Dream Guardian turns out not to be a loving, caring support character or mentor throughout Baldur’s Gate 3, but a Mind Flayer named “Emperor”, who manipulates the main character constantly – even if that doesn’t stop you from having a tentacled date with the Emperor.
This likely caused quite mixed feelings for the girlfriend when she saw that her boyfriend had recreated her for this role in the game.
