A player must painfully say goodbye to their permadeath character in No Man’s Sky. Even the head of the developer pays their last respects.
Permadeath characters pose a high hurdle for players in many video games. In this mode, a single death causes the character and the associated save file to be deleted and can never be played again. A small mistake can therefore lead to losing many hours of progress.
In No Man’s Sky, you can also face this challenge. A player on Reddit reports how they lost their character in this mode. This generates not only a lot of reactions from the community but also from the game’s developer.
No fuel, no oxygen, no chance
What is the problem? The player has landed their character on a planet they did not want to land on. This planet consists only of a small rock column on which their spaceship sits.
As far as the eye can see, there is only ocean around them. The planet is also full of toxic storms that create massive waves.
Since the player has no launch fuel left and no ferrite dust, they have no choice but to “sit in my ship, watch the storms, and wait for my oxygen to run out,” as the player writes.
You can see what this looks like in their post on Reddit, which we are embedding here:
What is the developer’s reaction? In addition to more than 12,000 upvotes on Reddit and nearly 500 comments, Sean Murray has also reacted to the player’s post. He is none other than the managing director of Hello Games, the developer of No Man’s Sky.
On X, he shared the player’s post and added a saluting emoji. Thus, the story surrounding the condemned character was also acknowledged in the highest circles of the game and honored in this way.
You can also face this special challenge in other games and play with permadeath activated. Players have already experienced in the hardcore mode of WoW that not only personal failure can lead to the loss of a character: Hundreds experience in WoW the nightmare of every MMORPG player: Thousands of hours just gone.
