An EVE Online fan took it upon themselves to explore the entire galaxy. After ten years, this challenge has been mastered – and it was anything but easy, as the pilot did not want to engage in battles.
What accomplishment did the fan achieve: Katia Sae wanted to explore the entire galaxy after the graphical update of the MMORPG EVE Online in December 2009. She did not anticipate that it would take around ten years.
Katia Sae did not just want to jump into the star systems and continue flying, but to explore the planets and peculiarities there and report about it in a blog. With 7,805 star systems in the online game, this is a significant achievement.
EVE Online is full of such stories, including an invasion that was planned for eleven months.
A Challenging Journey
What difficulties did Katia have to overcome? EVE Online is a game in which battles – especially in PvP – play a major role. However, Katia Sae is a pacifist and did not want to fire a single shot. At a time before the Signal Cartel formed to protect players, this was no easy task.
Katia Sae explains that she once found herself in a very precarious situation. A group of players blocked the only gate from a system. It took several days for Katia to spot a gap in the blockade and escape.
Moreover, there were difficulties with the unpredictability of the wormholes. Finding the right one to the desired star system can take days.
In addition, Katia Sae is only an alt, meaning a secondary character of the player, who of course also spends time in the online game with their main character.
A Masterpiece
This is why the journey was worth it: The 10-year journey was filled with wonderful moments. For instance, when Katia Sae visited the monument of the titan Steve.
Steve was the first titan destroyed in EVE Online. In memory of this, a monument was erected. Katia documented her journey in a blog and published over 50,000 screenshots of the things she could see and experience.
Katia Sae is the first pilot to successfully explore all 7,805 star systems in EVE Online – and that as a pacifist. Just for this achievement, the effort was worth it.
How does she know that she really explored all star systems? Katia Sae contacted the developer studio CCP Games, and community manager Paul Elsy, aka CCP Falcon confirmed to her that she had seen all star systems – except for one. Polaris is only accessible to game masters and developers of EVE Online to test new features there.
However, Katia was invited through a wormhole to visit Polaris and thus completed her journey to all star systems of EVE Online. For what she was able to achieve, she will now even receive her own monument, a 3D model of her avatar, which will be erected in Katia’s home system Saisio.
