The legendary “World of Warcraft” player Rextroy may need to find a new task. His wonder toads have now been nerfed. The Paladin player has pushed his escapades to the limit, prompting Blizzard to react.
It was actually foreseeable and just a matter of time. But a few days ago, it happened, and Blizzard took a large part of a YouTuber’s content base away. The “Gentle Pressed Toad” can no longer be used for exploits and bugs. The developers have pulled the emergency brake.
What kind of toad was that? The “Gentle Pressed Toad” is an item that Alliance players could buy in the Warlords of Draenor expansion in Shadowmoon Valley after completing some quests.
The toad could be bought an infinite number of times and thrown at a target location. It then counted as a damageable enemy – but not anymore. The toad is now “friendly” and thus can no longer be harmed.
The peculiarity of the toad was that it had a very low level. This meant that abilities that would deal only 1,000 damage at level 60 struck the toad for several hundred thousand damage. Rextroy could then use this to create absurd scaling with various abilities.
There are abilities that affect all enemies in the vicinity for a fraction of the damage suffered by the main target – regardless of the level of the enemies nearby. This has already resulted in insane multi-kills in PvP.
Why did Blizzard change this? Although Blizzard hasn’t mentioned the change anywhere, it seems obvious that they simply had enough of the various exploits and strange interactions that keep being discovered. Far too often, the toads are the focal point of such exploits, making it seem simply easier to restrict the functionality of the toads rather than having to tweak all other abilities every time.
Is Rextroy still making videos? Yes, definitely – he has already found a few new methods to achieve absurd damage numbers and even to almost solo current raid bosses. However, he now has to become even more creative, as one of his previously most reliable helpers, the mentioned toads, no longer work.
But we can probably assume that Rextroy will entertain us a few more times with particularly absurd methods to crush enemy players or raid bosses into the ground. When it happens again, you will of course read about it on MeinMMO.
What do you think of this “capitulation” on Blizzard’s part? Sad? Or the only right decision?
Elsewhere, Blizzard has also capitulated – and completely shut down a “WoW Mobile”.
