Microsoft’s pirate adventure Sea of Thieves is heading for the PS5. Although the title was released back in 2018, it is currently dominating pre-orders in the store. In contrast, the competitor Skull and Bones is doing rather modestly.
Which game is it about? In February, Microsoft announced it would be bringing four previously exclusive titles to PlayStation and Switch. Among the newcomers is the pirate adventure Sea of Thieves. Until now, these games could only be played on Xbox or PC:
- The quirky adventure Pentiment kicked things off and has been playable on PS4, PS5, and Switch since February 22, 2024.
- The surprise hit Hi-Fi Rush gave MeinMMO author Max the feeling a year ago that he had chosen the wrong console – from March 19, the title will be available on PS5.
- From April 16, PlayStation and Switch players will be able to fight for survival against insects in the survival game Grounded.
- Then Sea of Thieves will conclude, becoming playable on PS5 from April 30 – the title is already making waves in the PlayStation Store.
Sea of Thieves outshines Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Elden Ring
Sea of Thieves is in high demand: The pirate game currently dominates the pre-order charts in the PlayStation Store and is even represented twice in the top 10: The Premium Edition of Sea of Thieves holds the number 1 spot for most pre-ordered titles in Germany, while the Standard Edition ranks number 4 (as of March 11, 2024).
This places Sea of Thieves ahead of highly anticipated titles like Dragon’s Dogma 2 or the “Elden Ring” DLC Shadow of Erdtree.
How does it compare to Skull and Bones? While Skull and Bones and Sea of Thieves don’t have much in common gameplay-wise, both may fulfill the desire to feel like a pirate.
The PS5 release of Sea of Thieves could make Skull and Bones look rather outdated. After all, few games embody that specific pirate vibe as well as the Microsoft title. While there are no concrete player numbers available to compare the titles, several other factors can be contrasted:
- Sea of Thieves currently has almost twice as many viewers on Twitch as Skull and Bones (via SullyGnome)
- Sea of Thieves also leads on Metacritic.
Skull and Bones has had a rather lackluster start in comparison. It must be a heavy blow that the competition on the console, which they had previously monopolized, is now arriving.
While Sea of Thieves sails to PS5, one of the best PlayStation-exclusive titles is being prepared for a PC release. Perhaps this is to maintain the cosmic balance of platform exclusivity.
