With Agony Online, a new MMORPG will be released on Steam in December. It focuses on a dark atmosphere and zombies. In addition to a classic MMORPG experience, it will also offer a Battle Royale for hundreds of players.
What kind of game is this? In Agony Online, you can experience either a horror MMORPG or jump into a Battle Royale. Both modes exist within the same game but are thematically separate:
- The MMORPG primarily focuses on a dark story and PvP battles to control territories in the open world.
- The Battle Royale, on the other hand, takes place on an apocalyptic island that offers 48 square kilometers of space.
- It is currently unknown whether the same character can be used in both modes.
When will the game be released? Agony Online is set to release on Steam on December 18 and will be Free2Play. It is developed by GabHub, an indie studio that has yet to release a game on Steam.
The studio has also started a campaign on Kickstarter, where they aim to raise 3,000 euros. This campaign runs until December 1. However, it is uncertain whether this will be enough to prepare Agony Online for a Steam release.
Developers promise a lot of PvP and humor
What defines the MMORPG? Agony Online is built around a dark story. Your family perished in a fire. Only you could be saved. Satan, the murderer, has cursed you with eternal life. Now you hunt him down for revenge or at least to be reunited with your family.
- The game focuses on zombies, a rather rare setting in MMORPGs
- The focus is on PvP. Guilds should be able to fight each other in the open world. Additionally, battles for zones in the game world are planned every weekend.
- At launch, you will be able to level up to level 30. Later updates are planned to unlock additional levels.
- You can control your character either with point-and-click or WASD.
- There are dungeons and raids in the open world.
- Mounts and pets are planned.
- The game follows a linear story but also offers various side quests. According to its own statement, the game is not meant to be taken seriously and is full of memes and jokes.
What defines the Battle Royale? At the start of a round, you land somewhere on the island. This island becomes increasingly unstable and smaller due to explosions.
- Your task is to gather weapons and armor by opening chests or defeating zombie NPCs. Of course, you can also loot other players.
- There are said to be boss monsters in the game through which you can get high-end equipment.
In terms of gameplay, Agony Online’s Battle Royale is somewhat reminiscent of Shadow Arena, a BR spin-off of Black Desert that we tested for you at MeinMMO.
Graphical issues and a lot of work for the developers
What stands out about the game? So far, Agony Online has 9 supporters on Kickstarter. Overall, the new MMORPG is rather unknown.
The trailer also reveals some weaknesses:
- So far, the graphics are very simplistic
- The animations seem very jerky
- The world is still barren and monotonous
- The texts sound as if a developer recorded them themselves
Although the developers have stated that they want to use the funds from Kickstarter to pay for an animator and 3D artists, even with a successful campaign, the implementations will not be visible until well after the Steam release.
The first version, which is set to be released on December 18, will likely be quite basic. Whether the plans can actually be implemented seems questionable given this budget.
