Wolverine is perhaps the most famous mutant of the X-Men. Several movies, series, games, and even comics have made him the protagonist of stories. In a new comic from Marvel, the hero turns into a tragic figure who is forced to fight against his colleagues.
What kind of comic is this? Marvel is currently rebooting the controversial Ultimate Universe. This is essentially an alternative world where the heroes and villains we know are somewhat different from those in the classic 616 Universe. One of the heroes receiving a new comic series is Wolverine.
In Ultimate Wolverine No. 1 by author Chris Condon and artist Allessandro Cappuccio, the well-known mutant has a new, altered origin story that mixes with another well-known character. Unfortunately for Wolverine, things don’t turn out well as he is forced to fight against his old comrades.
Spoiler Alert: In this post, you will read spoilers for the current first issue of Ultimate Wolverine.
The mutant can also be seen in the animated series X-Men ’97:
Wolverine Becomes the Winter Soldier
Wolverine is turned into a character that is also known from the MCU. In a flashback, it is revealed that Wolverine is the only one who survived a plane crash. The plane crashed in the eurasian republic of the Maker. The Maker is a villainous variant of Mister Fantastic who rules like a dictator.
At the crash site, Wolverine is then captured by the evil variants of the mutants Magik and Colossus, whom he is supposed to fight as a resistance fighter. As in his original story, he is enhanced
by scientists by reinforcing his bones with adamantium.
In the process, his memories are also erased and he is turned into a mindless soldier who does not get the name Wolverine but Winter Soldier. In the 616 Universe, Bucky Barnes is captured and turned into a mindless Hydra soldier through mind control. This is depicted in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier from 2014.
In the first issue of the series, Wolverine is also sent on a mission to combat the resistance. In doing so, he brutally kills Mystique. In the fight against Nightcrawler, his former friend tries to appeal to his memories, but Wolverine kills Nightcrawler just as quickly, with Nightcrawler shedding a tear in death.
This is not the first time Wolverine tragically kills his own comrades. However, the mix of Winter Soldier and Wolverine is something new. Like many other superheroes, Wolverine has received many different variants throughout his comics. Many of those are quite bizarre: The 7 Weirdest Variants of Wolverine that We Probably Will Never See in the MCU
