Completely unexpectedly, the team behind RuneScape is releasing their new spin-off to the MMORPG. The first ratings on Steam are mostly positive.
What kind of game is it? RuneScape: Dragonwilds is based on RuneScape, one of 13 MMORPGs with the largest game worlds. However, it is a survival game, which brings typical features of the genre:
- As in other survival games, you need to farm resources to create tools and other items or build a shelter.
- You need to brew potions, craft equipment, and level up so that you can eventually face the Dragon Queen.
- The special thing about RuneScape: Dragonwilds is, on the one hand, the dragons, which are a constant threat to you. On the other hand, you can use magic to gather resources.
- You can experience all of this alone or with up to 4 group members.
Since April 15, 2025, the survival game has been in Early Access. Prior to that, it was only revealed that the title is supposed to be released sometime in spring. The developers expect that RuneScape: Dragonwilds will leave Early Access in early 2026 on Steam.

What is getting positive feedback? At this time, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has 79% positive reviews from 1,483 players on Steam (as of April 16, 2025, 10:30 AM). In the coming days and weeks, more reviews will come in that could change the results. However, the current ratings show a trend regarding how good the survival game has become.
Some users find that the title is suitable for both veterans and newcomers. The visuals are stunning, the combat system is cool over time, and crafting becomes interesting through the magic feature. Reviewers often compare the title to Valheim or Enshrouded.
One of the comments is wonderfully nostalgic:

What is being criticized? Some users warn that players should wait until the first patches fix many performance issues. The graphics options are still very limited. There is, for example, no option to adjust shadows, and the animations are quite stiff.
Furthermore, the survival game needs a lot more content to keep it entertaining in the long run. Therefore, some reviews recommend waiting a bit longer before players spend the 30 euros and dive into the survival game.
