Forest Reigns is a new game from a former Stalker developer on Steam. And you can tell: Not only is it a shooter, but the post-apocalyptic scenario is also present here, though different from what was known before.
What is Forest Reigns? The game is developed by VG Entertainment and is led by Ruslan Didenko. He was involved in Stalker: Call of Pripyat among other projects and has experience with the post-apocalypse.
This is exactly where Forest Reigns takes players. The survival shooter is set in a future version of Paris, where nothing of an atomic disaster and its consequences is visible, unlike in Stalker. On the contrary: Nature is thriving and flourishing, which leads us directly to the standout feature of Forest Reigns.
As the game’s name suggests, nature reigns here. This means both a curse and a blessing for the players.
Do you have a green thumb?
How does the game work? Paris is hardly recognizable in Forest Reigns. Everywhere, plants and mutated trees grow. They cover houses, streets, and lamp posts. It quickly becomes clear that nature has reclaimed the city.
In between, hostile soldiers and mutated animals roam the city. They are your opponents that you can combat with the help of Mother Nature. It should be possible to take advantage of the mutated trees. For example, if you shoot at a root, it grows in seconds and provides cover.
Or you shoot at flying spores that then explode and deal significant damage to your enemies. These are just two examples; in general, the developers want to create an immersive experience where you always incorporate your surroundings into the fights. Initial gameplay is shown in a video by IGN on YouTube.
But beware: At the end of the day, even your character is just a small piece of a puzzle in a world where humans have little say. This means you need to gather resources and adapt to nature. Otherwise, you may become a victim as well.
Forest Reigns aims to create a scenario that you can benefit from, but which can also become a great danger for you. Nature does not distinguish between friend and foe.
While the influence of Stalker and similar titles is noticeable, the eco-scenario could hold some exciting twists. There is currently no release date for the game yet. Another title on Steam follows a similar vein and is exceptionally ambitious: 100,000 players want the new survival MMORPG on Steam that is reminiscent of Stalker
