From Korea comes the new survival MMO Dysterra for PC on Steam. An open beta starts tomorrow, but you will need to sign up and then be lucky. It’s worth a look especially for sci-fi fans and players who already enjoy Halo, Destiny, or Fallout 76.

What is Dysterra? The basis of the survival MMO by developer Reality MagiQ is quite similar to other representatives of the genre. You are to gather resources and food, build a protective home, and survive in general. Threats like temperature and radiation additionally impose challenges.
The peculiarity is the recurring “Terrafire” that was uncovered by people when they recklessly drilled towards the Earth’s core. An outbreak of fire destroys everything in the vicinity. Together with other players, you are supposed to reach checkpoints and prevent this.
It is played from a first-person perspective with futuristic weapons in a beautiful, realistic world of the future. Through crafting, you can create your own weapons. The focus is on cooperation with others to prevent the terrafire, gather food, and survive together in the dangerous world. PvP will also be possible, although the emphasis seems to lie more on PvE.
How do I sign up for the beta? To participate in the closed beta, you only need to sign up on the Steam page of Dysterra (via Steam). You will find a green button at the top with the inscription “Request Access”.
Click this button and, if you are lucky, you will be invited to the beta. You will receive a message via email if you are accepted. A corresponding message on the Steam page will indicate that you are on the waitlist.
If you have been invited, you will find the game “Dysterra Playtest” in your Steam library. You can then download and play it when the beta starts.
Halo meets Fallout in space – When is Dysterra coming?
Visually, Dysterra is reminiscent of sci-fi shooters like Halo or Destiny, while the gameplay is likely much closer to the grand Halo saga. Space mages and strange abilities like in Destiny have not been seen so far.
Crafting, building, and surviving remind of Fallout 76 with individual components and quite a bit of improvisation. For example, you should be able to build a grill out of scrap metal to prepare the meat of hunted animals. There will also be turrets.
When will Dysterra be released? The exact official release date has not yet been announced. Dysterra is set to “officially release soon,” but no date has been provided yet. Kakao Games announced Dysterra back in May as one of four new MMOs for 2021. It should therefore be released sometime this year.
Among the four games presented was also the MMORPG Odin: Valhalla Rising for PC and mobile. It recently launched and had enormous success, reportedly earning over 11 million euros in two days. Success for Dysterra cannot be derived from this, but the beta will certainly provide more insight.
