With Rogue Trader, one of the best games about Warhammer 40,000 has been released in recent years. Now the creators have announced a sequel that fully embraces the greatest strength of the dark world.
What kind of game is this?
- After being a powerful rogue trader in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, you will play as a member of the Inquisition in the sequel Dark Heresy.
- In the classic cRPG style for which the developer Owlcat is known, you control a group of apparently up to four characters. On your journey, you will find companions that you can recruit. Romances will likely also be possible.
- Dark Heresy is based on the pen and paper of the same name, which you may know in Germany as “Schattenjäger”.
This is what Dark Heresy features: In the trailer and the first images, several companions and enemies were already shown. Especially present are the Kroot, who are primarily known as auxiliary units of the technologically advanced T’au. Kroot are characterized by their ability to adopt traits of enemies they consume.
A Kroot will be available as your companion. Other companions that have already been seen include:
- an Ogryn, a bulky metahuman known for its brute strength
- a jungle fighter from the most dangerous known death world Catachan
- a rune prophet of the elf-like Aeldari and a woman who could be a Medicae doctor of the Astra Militarum or even an Adepta Sororitas of the Ordo Hospitalis
The developers also mention fully voiced dialogues. The predecessor Rogue Trader received some criticism in this regard. However, you should not expect a German voiceover.
Dark Heresy is set to be released for PC (Steam, GOG, and Epic) as well as consoles (PS5 and Xbox). A specific release date is still pending.
Dark Heresy introduces the traitors that almost everyone ignores
Not much has been revealed about the story, only that you will fight against heresy and dark powers – so everything is as usual. However, a Chaos Space Marine in a special armor can be seen in the trailer.
Anyone familiar with heraldry will immediately recognize who stands there: a Night Lord. Night Lords are the descendants of Konrad Curze and are known for their expertise in psychological warfare. Their weapons are primarily fear and infiltration.
They instill fear, for example, by attaching the skin or body parts of enemies to their armor. Since Curze’s death, the Night Lords have been scattered and pose little threat to many, which is why they are often ignored. In the ranking of the traitor legions, the Night Lords are in last place.
Owlcat has also announced new content for Rogue Trader as part of Warhammer Skulls. Here you can look forward to the second DLC Lex Imperialis, which expands the story with a strand around the Adeptus Arbites. The DLC will be released on June 24, 2025, and promises a new companion, a new career, and around 15 hours of additional story.
Additionally, Rogue Trader still has the entire Season Pass 2 ahead, which is quite packed. The Season Pass includes two new expansions and cosmetic adjustments. In the third DLC, you will be able to visit a Necron tomb, while the fourth DLC takes you to a graveyard for void ships. Each DLC brings a new companion, quests, and about 15 hours of story. If you want to dive into the universe, Rogue Trader is already one of the best games to immerse yourself in the world of Warhammer.
