On December 20, 2019, the MMORPG Inferna entered Early Access on Steam. At that time, we reported from MeinMMO about the strong criticism that the game had to endure. But how does it look a year later?
What kind of game is it? Inferna is a Free2Play fantasy MMORPG that has often been referred to as “Metin 3” due to its visuals and content. It has been in development since 2016 and is implemented by an indie studio with only 3 employees.
Inferna offers you:
- Two playable factions, Caratas and Jerro
- The four classes Warrior, Wizard, Assassin, Half-Demon
- An open game world
- Mounts and pets
- Initial dungeons
- An enchantment system for equipment
- A localization in German, but also 10 other languages
How did the MMORPG start? Shortly after the release on Steam, there was a wave of criticism. In particular, technical issues, unfinished animations, the weak combat system, and the dull quest design were criticized.
About 40 hours after the release, the game had 150 reviews, of which only 42% were positive.
Overall, Inferna has now received 1,662 ratings on Steam, of which 62% are positive. Notably, the ratings have been mostly positive in the last 30 days with 77%. We look at what has changed.
New maps, guilds, and adjustments to the combat system
What’s new in Inferna: Since its release, Inferna has received an update almost every 2 weeks. These have expanded the game with numerous contents, although not everything planned in the roadmap has been implemented:
- Inferna offers 20 maps, 4 dungeons, and over 200 different creatures
- A guild system with its own skills and missions has been introduced
- There are new options for character customization. Anyone with an old character can even visually change that character upon first logging in
- The animations in combat have become significantly smoother, and there are now tab-targeting functions
- The UI has been slightly adjusted but still looks outdated
- There is an account-wide chest for players who like to use multiple characters
In addition to these larger changes, there have been numerous new items, skins, hotfixes, and balance adjustments. Additionally, events are held regularly, including celebrations for Halloween or Christmas, as well as short bonus events for a week or a weekend.
What is missing from the roadmap? Even at launch, we were surprised by the extensive roadmap. It promised numerous innovations, including professions, versions for iOS, Android, and consoles, as well as housing.
However, the listed points have not yet been implemented.
Nevertheless, you can feel great progress in comparison to the release version 2019 while playing. Only the monotonous quest design seems to have remained unchanged, at least in the starting area.
Inferna End of 2020 – Is it worth it?
It all depends on individual needs. Because Inferna is not a graphical wonder and does not reinvent MMORPGs by any means. However, if you enjoy old classics like Metin 2 or Knights Online and have no problem with grinding and weak quest design, you might find a new home in Inferna.
That’s what the latest reviews on Steam also say:
- Meralath writes: “Metin 2 Remastered. I used to play a lot of Metin 2. And I really mean a lot, believe me. So this game caught my interest and managed to surprise me. It is still rough and unfinished, and I am sure that they will regularly update and improve it day by day. I have high hopes.”
- Arcania – Zero likes the game but criticizes the animations: “You simply cannot love your own character. It runs like a cucumber and hits like a cucumber. The skills simply do not look good. It just doesn’t feel “heavy” or powerful. The environment, the monsters, loot, weapons, quests, NPCs + the whole environmental experience are top-notch! You should think about completely new animations for the character.”
- Oolith gives the MMORPG a negative review and also explains why: “Anyone who starts this game should accept that there is almost no story and quests. The primary goal in this game is looting and leveling. The graphics are quite okay for a “FreeToPlay” title. The controls are a bit clunky, but after 8 hours I got used to it. […] You have the typical gameplay, grinding a couple of mobs together and blasting them apart with AoE. So if you’re a fan of grind-heavy games, you could definitely play this here.”
What is still a problem? The biggest issue with Inferna is probably the population. According to Steamcharts, the MMORPG currently has an average of 30 concurrent players. In peak times, there were 80 users online simultaneously in the last 30 days. This is low, even for the still manageable world of Inferna.
However, the numbers could go back up during the official release.
When will Inferna be released? There is still no official release timeframe. Currently, there is no indication that Early Access will end soon.
Much is expected to change before the full release of the MMORPG, including voiceovers for quests, the ability to marry, new maps, and some things that have been left over from the 2020 roadmap.
