The Steam Next Fest currently invites you to try out hundreds of upcoming games. The action roguelite Reignbreaker has particularly captivated MeinMMO editor Lydia.
I first became aware of Reignbreaker about six months ago. Admittedly, “Like Hades, but with …” is a surefire way to pique my interest. As a little bonus, the action roguelite comes from the Berlin studio Fizbin, whose point-and-click series The Inner World already holds a special place in my heart.
During the ongoing Steam Next Fest, I had the chance to dip into the punk dystopia – but after just 15 minutes, I closed the game again. However, not because I didn’t like it.
Rather, I was so love-struck that I didn’t want to know how the demo would continue, in order to experience Reignbreaker fresh at its release on March 18 on Steam. I didn’t even want to know what kind of boss awaited me at the end of the dungeon or what abilities I could collect along the way.
But let’s go in order.
In Reignbreaker, you take on the role of the rebel Clef, who rises against the evil queen. The developers describe the setting as “medievalpunk” – a dystopian world somewhere between the Middle Ages and punk.
You grab your spear, make your way into the queen’s bastion, and process countless “high-tech medieval machines” into scrap metal along the way. You must dodge enemy attacks, avoid traps, and keep an eye on your heat level.
During a run, you can repeatedly choose from different abilities to enhance your build.
For me, everything about Reignbreaker was just right: the atmospheric setting, the fully voiced characters (only in the English voiceover), the fast-paced, fluid combat, and the music, ah, the music.
So can I recommend the roguelite? No – I’ve only played for 15 minutes. Perhaps something happens at minute 16 that ruins the entire gaming experience, who knows. Fortunately, you can currently try the demo for free on Steam and don’t have to rely on my judgment.
As the winner of the Steam Next Fest, the multiplayer game Mecha Break seems to be gaining attention. However, even though the title can attract many players, they are really angry about one thing. New multiplayer game on Steam is more popular than GTA 5 and Marvel Rivals, but its reviews are terrible
