There are many action RPGs that are inspired by Diablo. A pixelated Diablo-like
is finally getting a sequel and is set to release on Steam soon. Hammerwatch 2 (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch) offers many new features and completely forgoes live service.
What kind of game is Hammerwatch 2? Hammerwatch 2 is a classic action RPG in the style of Diablo. Its predecessor was already an action RPG; Heroes of Hammerwatch was then a rogue-lite.
In contrast, Hammerwatch 2 focuses on its direct predecessor and aims to expand on it significantly.
Hammerwatch 2 does not impress with next-gen graphics but offers a pixelated look reminiscent of the Super Nintendo era, like Chained Echoes.
Open World as the centerpiece of Hammerwatch 2
What does Hammerwatch 2 offer? In a new developer video, some features were presented. Unlike its predecessors, Hammerwatch 2 is intended to be a larger action-adventure experience.
While the first part offered a rather simple class design with a few active and passive skills, the latest installment aims to expand the classes. Mentioned are things like
- multiple damage types
- a significantly larger selection of active and passive abilities with additional side abilities
- each class is to receive a ranged alternative
Another character development feature includes the addition of loot and various weapons. While Hammerwatch 2 will not be as complex as Path of Exile 2, it still offers possibilities for development.
The mission structure is set to expand with decision-making options and fewer monotonous quests. However, the true centerpiece of Hammerwatch 2 is the new open world.
The new open world not only offers locations and NPCs from whom you can obtain quests and items but also diverse environments. The dungeons and areas you traverse are a mix of randomly generated and handcrafted locations.
Hammerwatch 2 aims to build on its two predecessors and expand many features.
When will Hammerwatch 2 be released? There is no specific release date yet. On the Steam page, it only states Available Soon
. A release in 2023 seems likely.
The game will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch in addition to Steam.
