Today, on March 3, 2020, Spellbreak enters beta for PS4. We explain what to expect in the new fantasy battle royale and how you can participate.
What is Spellbreak? Spellbreak is a battle royale that features colorful graphics similar to Fortnite . However, Spellbreak also has features that other representatives of the genre have already introduced, such as Apex Legends or Realm Royale.
Spellbreak was announced back in October 2018, but has not made much noise since then. Today, on March 3, the beta for the game starts. However, those who want to participate must first purchase a package.
The game is available for both PS4 and PC (Epic Store) and even offers crossplay. We have embedded the trailer here for you:
Beta Access and Release
How to participate in the beta: If you want to play the Spellbreak beta, you must purchase one of the founder packages. There are three different packages with different contents:
- Mystic Founder Package (“Mage” for PC) for €49.99, includes
- 3500 Gold (in-game currency, equivalent to $35)
- Mystic avatar and badge in the game (exclusive)
- “and more”
- Wizard Founder Package (“Battlemage” for PC) for €79.99, includes
- 6000 Gold (equivalent to $60)
- Mystic and wizard avatars and badges (exclusive)
- “and more”
- Master Founder Package (“Master” for PC) for €119.99, includes
- 15000 Gold (equivalent to $150)
- Mystic, wizard, and master avatars and badges (exclusive)
- “and more”
You can purchase the bundles either for PS4 in the PS Store (we have linked the Mystic bundle) or for PC in the Epic Store. More content will be announced later.
How long does the beta last? The developers have not indicated a duration yet. Accordingly, there is also no information about the release – except for the date “December 31, 2020”, which probably serves only as a placeholder.
Skills Instead of Weapons – How Spellbreak Plays
What makes Spellbreak special: You don’t just play a character, but a mage, and instead of fighting with weapons, you battle using spells. You have various classes available that can find unique spells for them in each round.
Instead of ammunition, everything runs on mana, which you must manage properly during the round so that you are not at a disadvantage in fights.
Each wizard has talents from three trees: Body, Mind, and Spirit.
You can only spend a limited number of talent points, but the learned talents will then affect your entire group. So you can particularly benefit from each other in teams.
The Classes of Spellbreak
In a blog post on the PlayStation Blog, the CEO of Proletariat, the developers of Spellbreak, introduced six of the available classes.
Pyromancer: Specializes in fire magic – The Pyromancer is particularly strong at medium range, dealing damage over larger areas with fire spells and leaving burning zones that help control areas.
Stoneshaper: Defensive mage – Uses earth magic to attack over huge distances, shake areas, and protect himself with shields.
Toxicologist: Specializes in poisons – A sneaky mage who covers areas with toxic gas, harms opponents, and can cloak himself. He is particularly strong at shorter distances.
Conduit: Uses elemental magic – With a kit primarily based on storm- and electricity-based spells, the Conduit can stun and control enemies and manage his mana better, allowing him to cast spells more frequently than other classes.
Tempest: Height specialist with wind magic – The Tempest utilizes verticality more than any other class and attacks from the air. His spells allow him to ascend above the battlefield, bombard opponents from above with powerful attacks, or pull them towards him.
Frostborn: Specializes in frost magic – Frostborn are fast mages who create ice surfaces to move on. They cover large distances quickly and can shred opponents with ice spears that require good aim.
To further customize yourselves, you also have runes and spells available that can influence the course of a round. Many things will probably only be explained during gameplay.
