One of the many genres of the anime world is the isekai genre. In this genre, characters from the real world are teleported or reincarnated into a parallel universe. Most of the time, they end up in a fantasy world. There is one anime in this genre that stands out in particular – and it has only 2 seasons.
Which anime is it? It is Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. The 1st season of the anime premiered in 2021, and the 2nd season was released last year. The series ranks 1st among isekai animes on MyAnimeList, specifically the 2nd part of the 1st season. It has a rating of 8.67.
This places the isekai anime ahead of the following series and movies:
- 2nd place: Konosuba (2019 movie): 8.43
- 3rd place: Re:Zero (Season 2 Part 2): 8.43
- 4th place: The Eminence in Shadow (Season 2): 8.39
- 5th place: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Season 2): 8.38
If all genres are included, the anime ranks 63rd. Thus, it does not come close to Frieren, which currently fiercely defends the 1st place of the best animes of all time.
For Mushoku Tensei, roughly the same number of votes were cast as for the other animes in the top positions. Only The Eminence in Shadow has only 334,000 ratings. However, this is because the 2nd season was only released last year. All other animes found in the ranking were released between 2019 and 2021.

What Makes Mushoku Tensei So Special
Why is Mushoku Tensei so popular? In recent years, numerous isekai animes have been released, making it difficult for many users on MyAnimeList to navigate through the plethora of series. Some say you don’t even have to be an isekai fan to like Mushoku Tensei.
The following points are particularly outstanding in the anime:
- The beautiful art style
- The animations during battles
- Great characters
Moreover, the anime is extremely immersive and has fantastic world building. This is especially important for the isekai genre, as the main characters are drawn into or reincarnated in another world. If the new world doesn’t convince, the anime would have a poor foundation.
What is Mushoku Tensei about? At the center of the story is 34-year-old Hikikomori. His life could be better: he has no job and is thrown out of his parents’ house after their death. In an attempt to save a group of teenagers from an impending truck, he unfortunately dies himself.
After his death, he is reborn as Rudeus in a poor noble family in a fantasy world. He retains his knowledge from his previous life and thus becomes a talented wizard at a young age. During his adventures, he meets numerous people, elves, and demons.
Where can I watch Mushoku Tensei? The anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. At this moment, all 24 episodes from Season 1 and all 13 episodes from Season 2 are available. The anime has a German and a Japanese dubbed version. The Japanese version includes German subtitles. For Season 1, you don’t even need an active subscription. For Season 2, you do.
Crunchyroll has more animes on offer. One of them was only made thanks to the fans: One of the currently most popular animes on Crunchyroll was produced solely because of the fans.
