After the great success of Game of Thrones, some tried to compete with their own productions of the series. A medieval series from Netflix is now facing a swift end after season 3, even though the screenwriter still had many ideas.
What kind of series is this? Although Game of Thrones will likely always stand on its own, the end of the series has left a gap that Netflix seems to want to fill. With their spin-off series from Vikings: “Vikings: Valhalla,” it actually brought all the “Game of Thrones” ingredients.
The series lacks neither religious fanaticism, sex, nor violence and battles, yet after season 3, the series will come to an end.

A harsh blow for Vikings fans
When is it over? After season 3, the spin-off series of Vikings will come to an end. The third season of the series will be released on July 11 on Netflix, with all 8 episodes expected to be available.
Season 3 is meant to give a conclusive ending to the story and takes place 7 years after season 2. The new season leads the characters to Constantinople, where political intrigues and religious influences collide.
Why is it ending so soon? When Netflix ordered 26 episodes of the series from screenwriter Jeb Stuart, it was a positive sign for the fans of Vikings. Seasons 1 and 2 reportedly amassed a total of 320 million hours of viewing time, which is not bad (via millenium.org).
Even before the release of season 3, Netflix announced in the fall of 2023 the cancellation of the series (via fernsehserien.de). The exact reason for the cancellation of the series is not known, but it seems that the series fell short of Netflix’s expectations.
Also, the fact that three seasons were booked instead of just one season as is now common may have been a bit too much for Netflix.
The series’ screenwriter, Jeb Stuart, stated in interviews that he had ideas for seasons 4–6 in case Netflix decided to go for more seasons of the series. Not only series want to build on the success of Game of Thrones, but also games, and one could even become the official MMORPG of Game of Thrones: A major gaming company is developing a new MMORPG for Game of Thrones
