Sons of the Forest has attracted hundreds of thousands of players with its release and everyone is talking about the nice companion Kelvin. Another exciting companion is almost ignored. Who is actually Virginia?
Kelvin is the star in Sons of the Forest. The elite soldier crashes with you and sustains a serious head injury, making it difficult for him to communicate. But you can give him tasks through notes that he gladly performs.
The game’s community loves Kelvin. There are dozens of memes, praises, and demands for… questionable mods for the companion. Most players can even forgive him, when he “accidentally” takes hours of gameplay with his axe.
Nevertheless, Kelvin is not the only character in Sons of the Forest who deserves the spotlight. Besides him, there is a second companion who offers much more depth: Virginia, a friendly mutant who is an enormous help.

Virginia – The Lost Daughter
Who is Virginia? In the story of Sons of the Forest you are supposed to find a missing billionaire. When you start a new game, you can view various dossiers on the way to the island with information about the missing persons in the helicopter.
In one of these files, the 20-year-old student and daughter of the billionaire, Virginia Puffton, is shown. Virginia is missing, like her mother and father. And you will meet her later on the island, albeit slightly changed.
Virginia has three arms and three legs, and is apparently on the verge of mutating. However, she is not hostile towards you like other mutants on the island; you often find her peacefully bathing or gathering herbs.
What makes Virginia so special? Like Kelvin, Virginia helps you survive in the forest. However, she does not simply follow you; you first have to befriend her and convince her that you mean her no harm.
Unlike Kelvin, you cannot give Virginia commands. She has a rather cat-like temperament and does what she wants – but she can get used to you and protect you on her own. She brings gifts with a soft “Here, please!” and eventually even accepts gifts from you.
This way, you can equip Virginia with new clothes so she doesn’t get cold or hand her a pistol and a shotgun. She won’t want to use these at first, but once she gets used to them, she will protect you and your camp.
Virginia does not even use ammunition, which could still be a bug attributed to early access. At the moment, this makes her the optimal companion who independently defends the camp if you treat her well.

Players Adore the Mutant
The reason Kelvin is a bigger topic is that Virginia can be missed. Some have even accidentally killed her because she looks like an enemy – for example, MeinMMO video producer Anna Alberg with her crew.
Like Kelvin, she is then permanently dead for that playthrough and does not return – which is why I refuse to kill Kelvin, even though my boss demands it. The same goes for Virginia.
Slowly, however, more and more posts about the mutant are appearing on social media, Reddit, and TikTok. Some call Virginia the best part of the entire game, while others appreciate the special moments and details hidden in the game.
The behavior of all NPCs depends on how you interact with them. This is true for both Kelvin and Virginia, with the latter even able to mourn for the other companion if he dies. There are also numerous fan arts of Virginia:
The fascination with Virginia is also linked to the desire to treat the woman as a real RPG companion. Some players wish, for example, to have a romance with her. This even works, at least in a hint in the secret ending of Sons of the Forest.
The internet would not be the internet if it did not have dirty thoughts. Accordingly, the wishes for sex with Virginia are widespread, as well as the search term “Virginia rain,” which relates to the fact that her top becomes quite transparent when it rains.
No one has figured out how exactly she came to her mutations, though. However, she seems to have only gotten them on the island, as outfits that you give her and that apparently originate from her have only 2 instead of 3 shoes.
Unlike Kelvin, there are heaps of hints about Virginia’s background and history on the island that you can find when exploring the bunkers and caves. That is why Virginia is currently an incentive for many players to invest more hours in Sons of the Forest than they actually would need to complete it.
