To catch a new Pokémon for its team, it must first be weakened. For this, trainers employ Pokémon that are already in their team and initiate a battle. However, the Pokémon-anime shows that it can also be done the traditional way.
Which moment is it about? With each new region, the Pokémon team of the protagonists changes, as does that of the antagonists. Team Rocket therefore had to put together a new Pokémon team in the Hoenn region.
James had already caught a Tuska, but Jessie only had her Woingenau available. While this Pokémon can counter other attacks well, it is too weak itself. Therefore, a new Pokémon was needed for Jessie’s team.
She chose Vipitis as her new team partner. Presumably, she wanted a new snake Pokémon after Arbok had to leave her team. The Cobra Pokémon had to protect a group of Rettan from a poacher. However, catching Vipitis turned out to be harder than initially thought.
Mauzi is a very special Pokémon that has learned the language of humans:
It doesn’t take a Pokémon to catch Pokémon
How did she catch Vipitis? Jessie tried to catch Vipitis with her last remaining Pokémon:
- She threw Woingenau at Vipitis, which had no effect because it cannot attack by itself.
- She threw Mauzi. However, the cat Pokémon wasn’t interested in the fight and was immediately knocked out.
In the process, Jessie was knocked over and dropped a rice ball. Vipitis was excited about the rice ball but ended up grabbing Jessie’s hair and chewed off a good chunk of her hairstyle.
You can watch the scene in the following YouTube video by Greninja Trainer:
Jessie then became so angry that she attacked Vipitis with moves like Scratch Fury and Mega Kick. She basically became the Pokémon that weakened Vipitis. Therefore, no real pocket monster was needed to catch the snake Pokémon.
In her fury, Mauzi and James had to remind their teammate to throw the Pokéball at Vipitis. Thanks to the scene, we know that it’s better not to mess with Jessie when it comes to her hair! The Pokémon manga has already proven how brutal it can be in the world of colorful pocket monsters.
Does it fit the Pokémon DNA? The entire scene feels so absurd because it is the only moment in the anime where a human catches a Pokémon with raw violence. The scene goes against the concept of the anime and therefore stands alone.
In the mainline video games, it is not possible to catch a Pokémon with raw violence. It would also look too ridiculous if our character suddenly entered the battle themselves.
