In the previous season, a vendor in Diablo 4 was the best place for Uniques. Even Mythic Uniques could drop there. But with Season 7, Blizzard changed something, and many players agree: The vendor is now almost useless.
Which vendor is being discussed? It is about the Curiosities Vendor in Diablo 4, where you can “gamble” loot for collected Obolusses. You select items from a specific category, which can then have a rarity from common to unique when they drop.
At the Torment levels, ancestral items are the pinnacle for strong builds. These “bequeathed” items always have at least one GA (greater affix) and an item power of 800. This means: better affix rolls and more power, making them the best items in the game. You will find them as Legendary, Uniques and Mythic Uniques.
In Season 6, the Curiosities Vendor was one of the best places for the coveted items, and Diablo expert Raxxanterax feared a nerf of the “Gambler”. With the new Season 7, this has indeed happened.
Why is the vendor now useless? On Reddit, Entire_Helicopter_94 shares their experiences with the Curiosities Vendor and shows what they got for 2,000 Obolusses. Thanks to the ashes from the “seasonal blessing,” they had a 40% higher chance to receive a second item per purchase. It is not apparent at what difficulty level they are playing.
The screenshot shows that they “gambled” a total of 32 amulets, including:
- 3 Legendary
- 15 yellow items
- 14 blue items
We also blew our Obolusses and gambled for rings until the inventory was full. We got 4 legendary rings – but none of them were “bequeathed” items:
Players Suggest: Better Buy Keys and Open Silent Chests
What does the community say? In the comments, users are discussing the vendor in the current season. Waramp considers the Obolusses to be “useless” – they just need to take a few steps into a “green zone” and return with three Legendary items. Cptn_Canada feels similarly: “If I teleport to a green zone and make a coffee in the meantime, there will already be several Legendary items lying around.”
The green zone refers to the seasonal “head-hunting” zones, where there are tasks for the Whispering Tree and a high monster density. They resemble Helltides and are also referred to by the community as “Witchtides.”
Some players recommend investing the Obolusses in “Whispering Keys” instead of spending them on random items. These keys cost 10 Obolusses each and open “Silent Chests” in the open world – especially in the Witchtides it is worth it. By the way, the chests also drop keys for the new “Root Horte” dungeons besides loot.
In addition, strangelyliteral writes: “Whispering Keys are actually so good now, it’s insane.” And heartbroken_nerd gives the tip: “There are tons of Silent Chests in the head-hunting zones – just keep opening them constantly.” Others point out that you can also use the Obolusses in the undercity of Kurast.
What exactly was nerfed? In the patch notes for patch 2.1.0, which came with Season 7 on January 21, 2025, the developers wrote about the vendor: “A bug was fixed that caused unique and mythic unique items to be available from the Curiosities Vendor more often than intended.”
In the Reddit thread, players report that they wished for a middle ground here. Rentahamster comments: “Last season, [the gambling] was too strong; this season it is too weak. It should be somewhere in the middle. Additionally, players need more meaningful ways to spend their Obolusses.”
For many players, the new Witchtides are currently the best way to quickly acquire loot. However, some feel overwhelmed by the enormous amount of drops, while others are pleased with the yield for this very reason. You can find out more about it here: “You will never be happy” – Many are currently complaining about too much loot in Diablo 4, while casual players find it just right.
