One of the best-known and most respected streamers on Twitch is the veteran Cohh Carnage. He is part of the player advisory board of the platform. Following the ban fiasco involving the WoW player, Mohamed ‘Ziqo’ Beshir, Cohh Carnage is now advocating for a change in Twitch’s ban policy behind the scenes. Because it’s simply not good.
This ban outraged people:
- The WoW streamer Ziqo has been on Twitch for 10 years and has never done anything wrong during that time. He is a respected member of the WoW community, is a PvP player, caster, and analyst.
- His channel was just banned for a week by Twitch for ‘hate speech.’ However, nobody at Twitch could tell him what exactly he had done wrong. The streamer was desperate because he was not aware of any wrongdoing, but now lost important opportunities at Twitch due to the punishment.
- After a public outcry, Ziqo’s ban turned out to be a misunderstanding. Apparently, someone at Twitch misinterpreted the words ‘Fuck it’ as ‘Faggot,’ a derogatory term for homosexuals that is considered ‘hate speech.’ The ban was then lifted as an error since the word was not actually said and would have made no sense in context. However, the ban was only lifted after 6 days and 6 hours, just before it would have expired anyway.
The ban should have been resolved in an hour instead of 6 days
This is Cohh Carnage: The streamer Cohh Carnage is a veteran on Twitch. He once streamed every day for 2000 days in a row and is considered a kind of ‘the exemplary gaming’ streamer. An incredibly solid and positive streamer, with games at the center.
Cohh Carnage is part of the ‘Twitch Safety Advisory Council’ along with several other Twitch streamers. This is a kind of player advisory board where Twitch listens to streamers’ opinions on sensitive issues.
The safety council gained attention in May 2020, when a woman was appointed to the council who behaved like a deer.
This is what the streamer demands: Carnage states: The ban of Ziqo lasted 6 days, which really hurts. In fact, the ban could have been resolved in an hour if Twitch had listened to his suggestion. Carnage believes that ‘Account Managers’ should be involved in bans, who have direct contact with streamers.
An Account Manager could have simply contacted Ziqo, shown him the clip and said: ‘Our people believe you said that, for this we have to ban you.’ Ziqo could then have explained: ‘No, I didn’t say that. I said the other thing.’ The problem would have been solved and the ban would have been lifted after one hour.
In reality, the Account Manager couldn’t help Ziqo at all because he didn’t know why he was banned himself. He simply told Ziqo: ‘I have bad news for you.’
Carnage demands: Twitch must improve in dealing with ‘false bans’ and offer players compensation when they are wrongly banned.
Carnage says he is not allowed to speak publicly about his role on the Twitch board, but this is exactly one of the points that urgently needs to improve. That’s what he is advocating for.
Twitch’s ban policy has been controversial for a long time. In December, a female streamer stripped naked and showcased everything that can be shown in a sex show. However, she was only banned for 3 days because Twitch apparently believed she only accidentally stripped:
