Currently, a competition is running in Destiny 2, but the Titans have already secured a podium spot before the end of the event. Why was there no excitement, and what do players wish for their Olympics?
Where have Titans won already? Until May 12, the Guardian Games are taking place in Destiny 2. During the event with strong Olympic ties, players are not fighting against nasty aliens, but should show which of the three character classes has the say.
It is likely that Titans have the say during the competition. They are currently on an 18-day winning streak, which mathematically secures them the victory. Therefore, the award ceremony is basically just a formality.
Unfortunately, the overwhelming dominance and early victory have shown what went wrong with the Guardian Games.
The situation before the event: When the Guardian Games were announced, players feared the lack of excitement for the first time. However, the reason was not the current expected winners but the Hunters. Hunters are the most popular class in the Destiny universe and outnumber Warlocks and Titans.
To ensure a fair and exciting competition, Bungie announced a weighting. This way, every class was supposed to have the same chances of winning the event.
The Guardian Games lack a competitive spirit
That’s why there’s no excitement: From the second competition day onwards, the Titan, who was actually considered an underdog, dominated the Guardian Games. Allegations of cheating arose within the community. Bungie was able to clarify the situation and legitimized the Titan’s winning streak.
The last event week was kicked off with double points. And Bungie encouraged the Hunters and Warlocks (via Twitter). In this way, some excitement was supposed to arise in the end.
However, the situation remains the same every day:
Instead of exciting competitions, the same old routine greeted players every day. Thus, exactly what players expected before the event happened, just with a different class in charge.
This is what players would have liked to see: The community agrees that the Guardian Games as a concept is a strong idea. Many Guardians feel very committed to their class or have a beloved main even with three characters. However, the implementation of the event lacked the competitive spirit despite cool medals and laurels.
These ideas are expressed by players:
- Participate with only one class – this would underline the belonging
- Less focus on the same old bounties
- Special event playlists were missing – PvP matches where teams consist of only one class or even “4vs.4vs.4” variants (instead of the regular 6vs.6) would be conceivable
- After the one-time exotic reward there was no motivation to continue – rare upgrade materials for each gold medal would be an option
- The return of the SRL – The Sparrow Racing League
The focus during the Guardian Games was too much on quickly completing as many bounties as possible. Other approaches for friendly rivalry among the classes would have been much better.
Bungie shows understanding: Even during the Guardian Games, Bungie revealed some insights and published, for example, statistics and explained the questioned medal weighting very transparently. Additionally, the Destiny developer promised to move away from bounty grinding in future events.
Also, in the TwAB from April 7 (via Bungie), it was stated that they take the community’s suggestions to heart and: “We have seen some suggestions on how the Guardian Games could have scored beyond laurels and medals.”
In this context, Bungie awarded a community video that shows a funny and creative version of the Guardian Games as the coveted “Movie of the Week”. In the clip, the famous Destiny storyteller MyNameIsByf acts as the commentator of the competition, but watch the video here yourself:
