In the third movie of Star Wars, Order 66 takes place, the major action against the Jedi, where their order was meant to be exterminated. Only a few survived this event, including a character who had extraordinary abilities.
What was Order 66? This is an emergency command issued by Chancellor Palpatine to his clone troopers. It states that all Jedi must be killed immediately. The reason given was the supposed betrayal by the Jedi. This is of course just a pretext by Palpatine to eliminate the most powerful enemy of the Sith once and for all.
As seen in Episode 3, many Jedi fell victim to this nefarious plan. Only a few survived the massacre, including one who is briefly seen in Episode 1. Among those who managed to escape was a Jedi named Grandea. She evaded certain death during Order 66 and even managed to survive later pursuits by the Empire’s Inquisition.
She was aided by an old trick, which she mastered as well as very few other Jedi.
Master of Manipulation
How did Grandea survive? The Jedi was very talented when it came to using the mind trick. Grandea was fascinated by what could be done with it. After all, individuals could be wonderfully manipulated.
Others in the Jedi Order considered the mind trick to be unworthy and preferred to fight with a lightsaber – which made for epic scenes in the films. In contrast, Grandea studied the old technique of the mind trick and applied it successfully at the right moment.
When she was found by clone troopers who wanted to kill her, Grandea convinced the soldiers only with the power of her thoughts that she did not belong to the Jedi. While this may not have been honorable in the eyes of the Order, numerous other Jedi died while confronting the enemy with a lightsaber in hand.
What happened to Grandea next? The escape was successful. Grandea listened to the Force and realized that her life as a Jedi could not continue like this. She abandoned this calling, destroyed her lightsaber and her robe, and withdrew.
Later, the Empire’s Inquisition hunted down the surviving Jedi. The mind trick helped Grandea remain hidden. She could convince beings that she had not been at a location. This made her almost invisible.
However, Grandea then came close to death. Two of the most powerful Inquisitors found her. A fight ensued in which Grandea was even hit. However, through the mind trick, she managed to convince both opponents of her death. They then left her alone.
The Inquisitors returned to Darth Vader and reported the Jedi’s death. Vader was rightly skeptical, but in the end, the search was called off.
In the comic “Legacy of Vader #7”, which has just been released, much of this story (and more) is revealed. Grandea is depicted in the comic as an old woman who meets Kylo Ren in a tavern and reads his thoughts. This talent ensured her survival, even though it may not seem as spectacular as a lightsaber battle.
