If you’re looking to learn a new language, chances are you’ve heard of Duolingo. The app is infamous for its Anime-memes. Now it’s getting its own series.
What does the app have to do with Animes? Duolingo is an app for learning new languages, including Japanese. But not only the app itself, even Duolingo’s social media channels are linked to Japan.
The team behind the green owl, which is Duolingo’s mascot, has previously posted memes revolving around Animes:
- Duolingo has already recreated a scene from Jujutsu Kaisen with its own mascots. This is a significant spoiler if you don’t know the manga (see it on X).
- For the movie Haikyu!! The Garbage Dump Playoff, the social media team even uploaded a trailer since they couldn’t wait for the film (see it on X).
- The ice skating anime Yuri!!! on Ice has also received its own parody. You can check it out on YouTube.
The team has some experience with Animes. And as seen in a new trailer, the app will soon have its own anime!

Duolingo brings green owl in anime style
What kind of anime is this? The new Duolingo anime centers around the final test. As seen in the trailer, the app’s learning mechanics play a significant role. There are buttons with different words in various languages that must be used correctly.
The green owl becomes the villain, forcing the other mascots from the app to participate in a beta program. Their lives are at stake, as there are lava pits and falling rocks.
The streak that players can achieve in real life by learning multiple days in a row is also visible in the anime. And if you don’t maintain this streak, the app will often remind you emphatically to complete your daily exercises. Even the icon in your menu can change into a sad owl if you don’t study. Typical clichés like a magical girl transformation are also depicted.
What do others think about it? In the comments under the YouTube video, fans are divided. On one hand, there are viewers who are excited about the anime and can’t wait for it to come out.
On the other hand, there is criticism that Duolingo has fired its creative employees and replaced them with AI. Duolingo’s CEO announced in April 2025 that contractors are to be gradually replaced by AI. Because of this, some fans intend to boycott the anime.
When and where can the anime be seen? The anime consists of a total of 5 episodes, which will be available on YouTube on October 13 at 5 PM German time. You’ll need to pay no subscription fees to watch it.
