In SMITE 2 (Steam, PS5) gods and mythical creatures from all over the world engage in battle. The game will switch to a Free2Play model in January and aims to be particularly beginner-friendly.
What kind of game is this? SMITE 2 is a MOBA. Similar to League of Legends and Dota, two teams of 5 players each face off against each other. However, SMITE forgoes the classic top-down view and instead delivers third-person action.
An alpha version of the game was already released on August 27, 2024. For early access, players had to purchase one of the three founder editions, which cost between 30 and 100 €. From January 14, 2025, the game will switch to a Free2Play model as planned.

Action-MOBA with gods from around the world
How does SMITE 2 play? Each player takes control of a hero with special abilities. In SMITE 2, these are gods and beings from various mythologies, including the lightning-throwing Zeus, the god of the dead Anubis, and the trickster Loki.
The core of the game is the so-called “Conquest” mode. In this mode, you fight your way through a map to the enemy base to kill their titan. The maps are typically divided into three lanes, which are corridors. These are guarded by towers.
For the Free2Play launch, the developers promise on Steam:
- 45 gods
- the new game modes “Joust” (3v3) and “Duel” (1v1)
- an alpha for the game mode “Assault”
- and much more
Comfort features for newcomers to the genre
How hard is it to get into? MOBAs are not exactly known for being beginner-friendly. They are often played at a competitive level and there are so many items and details to keep in mind that it can quickly become overwhelming.
SMITE 2 aims to make it easier for beginners and offers several comfort features such as automated purchases of strengthening items and upgrades. This way, you can already get a feel for your hero without having to wade through tons of descriptions first.
