Many fans of Hunt: Showdown 1896 are disturbed by the new Ghost Face skin. Now the developers are responding and defending their decision to bring the hunter with the iconic mask into the game.
What is it about? Recently, the German development studio Crytek introduced a new hunter for Hunt: Showdown 1896. Not only does he bear the name “Ghost Face,” but he also wears the mask of the slasher icon, which first hunted teenagers in cinemas in 1996.
Many fans find the skin anachronistic: After all, Hunt: Showdown 1896 takes place exactly 100 years before the release of the first Scream movie. Therefore, the mask has no place in the game. They argue that the skin does not fit the identity of Hunt and only disrupts the immersion.
Here’s what Ghost Face looks like in Hunt: Showdown 1896:
According to the developers, Ghost Face fits perfectly into the game
What do the developers say about this? In a post on X, the developers respond to the fans’ criticism. They defend Ghost Face’s presence with the lore written for the hunter:
We believe that the latest Ghost Face Rampage DLC fits perfectly into the dark, supernatural atmosphere – as a timeless, almost mythological figure that transcends eras. In the 1890s, a madman took on the mask, driven by its dark whispering, which plunged him into a bloody frenzy during a hunting trip in Louisiana – the rest is history.
The developers assure that they approach the selection of “IPs and personalities” for collaborations with care. They ensure that these not only remain “true to their own brand” but also fit the setting of Hunt.
What are the reactions from the community like? On X and Reddit, many fans remain dissatisfied, as also shown by a long Reddit thread concerning the statement. It does not help that Crytek has indirectly announced further collaborations like this.
With Hunt: Showdown 1896, a new era for the already successful multiplayer shooter was supposed to begin, but constant community frustration was likely not intended.
