Suguru Sugita is a former editor who was responsible for the Manga One Piece. The creator of the pirate story, Eiichiro Oda, has revealed the nature of the One Piece, the great treasure that everyone is searching for, to only a few people. Sugita is one of the lucky ones.
What does Sugita know about the One Piece? Sugita gave an interview with Takuma Naito, another former editor of One Piece and thus Sugita’s successor, about the manga. In the conversation, he revealed a small detail about the legendary treasure and the ultimate goal of Ruffy’s crew: the One Piece.
As X-user and One Piece enthusiast sandman_AP reports, Sugita revealed that it is hard to describe the One Piece with a single word. Naito then had to rein him in so that the two wouldn’t lose their jobs at Jump Publishing, where they were still employed at that time:
This means that the One Piece is more complex than just a regular gold treasure. However, what exactly Ruffy and the Straw Hat crew are striving for is not revealed. We’ll have to wait until the end of One Piece, which currently does not have a fixed date.

What do we already know about the One Piece? In an interview from 2019, Oda already revealed that the One Piece is not “the friendship between the Straw Hats.” He would hate such a type of treasure. He recalled a specific example from his childhood.
In the fantasy story “The Wizard of Oz,” the journey was in fact the real treasure. Oda absolutely did not like that as a child. Such a story was not acceptable for him. Since Ruffy and his friends have a fantastic journey, Oda wants to give him a suitable treasure.
It can be interpreted from this that the treasure must be something material. The ending of One Piece will not revolve around a conceptual reward, but rather a valuable compensation for the hardships of the long journey.
However, it is unclear who the treasure comes from. Gol D. Roger claimed that he hid the One Piece somewhere on the Grand Line. However, he already found a treasure on that island, which Joy Boy left behind, the first pirate of all time. The treasure made Roger laugh back then.
Who is Suguru Sugita? Sugita was the editor of One Piece from 2014 to 2017. He was the 8th person overall to work as an editor for the manga.
