Amber “Blodwedd Mallory” McKee is a big fan of the MMORPG The Secret World: Legends. She even wrote a novel about the game and has now received permission to publish and sell this novel.
If a fan of an online game writes a book about this title and then even receives permission to publish it, then you know that you are dealing with a very liberal development studio.
A Novel about The Secret World
This is how Funcom makes a fan happy: While other developers and publishers refuse to allow fans to officially publish novels about the games, it is different with Funcom.
The game studio allowed Amber “Blodwedd Mallory” McKee to publish and even sell her book “To Sir, with Love: An Unofficial Legend of The Secret World”!
What is the book about? At the end of the world, Solomon Island is shrouded in fog, and the dead rise from their graves. Innsmouth Academy Senior Blodwedd Mallory fights to save her school from destruction.
In doing so, she uncovers the dark history of the academy. Her mission is to stop Mal’un, the Cursed, and to become a Templar herself. However, this is not an official story from the game, but an approved fan fiction by Funcom.
How the novel is received: The reviews on Amazon are consistently very good, both from players and non-players.
Shirley Ryan writes on Amazon: “The book made me log into the game. I loved it!”
How fans of The Secret World react: The community is pleasantly surprised that Funcom has allowed the publication of the novel. Many see it as a kind of promotional action, which makes Funcom likable and doesn’t let them appear as one of the “bad” developers who do not allow fans to contribute a bit to their favorite game.
Bryan Correll writes on MassivelyOP: “I would call this a smart move by Funcom. It first creates goodwill within the player community. And if the novel gains an audience outside the core community of the game, it could bring new players to the MMO. All of this costs Funcom nothing.”
Where can you get the novel? “To Sir, with Love: An Unofficial Legend of The Secret World” is available for purchase on Amazon. However, the book is written in English.
