Scrubs has had many guest star appearances throughout its 9 seasons. But one stands out to this day. Not only because the hero of your childhood embodies a strong doctor.
Scrubs featured many guest stars in single or multiple episodes. One of the most famous is probably Brendan Fraser, who perfectly represents in 3 episodes what makes Scrubs such a great series. Michael J. Fox also follows a similar vein, known to most as Marty McFly from Back to the Future.
In 2 episodes of Season 3, he plays the doctor Dr. Kevin Casey. He remains memorable not only because he is a good actor but also because he brings much more than a supporting character usually does.
Dr. Kevin Casey is the true star of Season 3
What makes Kevin Casey such a special character? In Episode 12 of Season 3, Dr. Kevin Casey is introduced for the first time. He is a guest professor and also an internist and surgeon, making him perfect for J.D., Elliot, and Turk. J.D. even calls him Superdoc, who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder
.
Michael J. Fox fits perfectly into the dynamics of the series right from the start. He has great comedic timing and a past with Dr. Cox. Both were interns together. Cox, as J.D.’s role model, disappoints the young doctor in the episode. He refuses to go out for drinks with him, and when J.D. wants his help, he is only insulted.
That’s where Casey comes in handy. He quickly develops into a new role model for J.D. and acts as the perfect antithesis to Cox: Casey accepts his problems and seems to be the best doctor anyone has seen in that hospital. He even defeats Dr. Cox. Within the 2 episodes, he seemingly changes the lives of all the main characters. Casey is simply the great idol for all doctors.
However, as the episode progresses, it becomes clear that it’s not as positive as it seems at first. Casey shows the doctors what they will never achieve. Turk can never become such a good surgeon, and Dr. Cox is not the best doctor in the world.
But: While Casey is one of the best doctors to be seen in Scrubs, he is also not the super doctor
he is initially portrayed as. At the end of Episode 13, a weak moment is shown. After an operation, he washes his hands for hours. After J.D. sees this, Casey’s mentor status for J.D. breaks, and he mentally concludes: I believe that if you carry your package, half the battle is won.
Turk wants to build a family with Carla and has other priorities than just being the best. Dr. Cox has a son to be proud of. For J.D., Turk, and Dr. Cox, this represents strong character development, which also solidifies the further course of the series and the decisions made. J.D. concludes the episode with the words: And yet everything is only half as wild when you consider what others have to cope with.
Michael J. Fox is the perfect Dr. Casey
The episodes with Casey show how much personal success or the success of others is romanticized and that there are indeed limits. No matter how good one wants to be, limits are reached. This applies to J.D., Dr. Cox, Turk, and indeed to every person. Dr. Casey represents this very well in the episode, without feeling like a foreign body.
It almost feels like he has been there for several episodes already. Michael J. Fox embodies him wonderfully and holds his own against the other actors. He is funny, but the dramatic scenes regarding his illness also leave an impression. He is not just a guest star; he is one of the best characters in the entire run of Scrubs.
Michael J. Fox has struggled with Parkinson’s disease since he was 29. According to michaeljfox.org, he initially kept the disease a secret and continued to work as an actor. He acted in 103 episodes of the series Spin City between 1996 and 2001. During the filming of Season 3, he publicly announced his diagnosis, and after Season 4 of the series, he stated that he would no longer work full-time as an actor but focus on raising funds for Parkinson’s disease to advance research.
However, he still played in several supporting roles afterward. These include roles in Scrubs, Zootopia 2, or Shrinking. Between 2013 and 2014, he even released his own series The Michael J. Fox Show. It is also no coincidence that he appears in Scrubs and Shrinking. Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, also worked on Spin City as a co-creator and has been working on Shrinking since 2023.
Thus, the actor behind Dr. Casey is also a good example that one should not give up despite a tragic fate.
What does MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes find so special about Dr. Casey? The greatest compliment I must give to Michael J. Fox: Dr. Casey does not feel like a guest appearance. If someone had told me he had been there since Season 1, I would probably have believed it.
This hero of many childhoods fits perfectly into the cast of Scrubs and unites the beautiful, funny, but also sad elements of the series in his character – and that in just 2 episodes. This is not only a masterpiece of the script but also of Michael J. Fox, whose role as Dr. Casey will likely stay in my memory even more than Back to the Future.
