What makes Doom RPG special? The developer Fountainhead Entertainment released Doom RPG as a mobile game in 2005.
Unlike the other games in the series, Doom RPG is not a typical shooter, but, as the name suggests, an RPG. It explores the world of Doom in a dungeon-crawler style. Observant players can find secret rooms.
The weapons and characters come from previous games in the Doom series. The player character is equipped with axes and firearms and eliminates the enemies that appear.
The enemies in the game spawn one after another and are fought in individual rounds. One action is possible per round.
An action includes moving the player character or using a weapon. After each player action, each enemy in the room takes an action as well.
Free actions include actions like turning in a different direction and changing weapons. Doom RPG loosely follows familiar, analog systems such as Dungeons & Dragons.
Interesting elements that the game emphasizes are dialogues and storytelling. There are many conversations with NPCs, and the player can read emails at terminals, through which small narratives are included.
What do Doom fans say about it? On reddit, the Doom community expressed their excitement (via reddit). Some reminisce about the time when they first played Doom RPG because of the remake.
- WINDEX_DRINKER said: ‘I remember playing it in 2004 on my tiny LG phone, along with the Elder Scrolls RPG. I believe Doom RPG was the only one I completed. And that was right before my high school days. Now I’m married, have a kid, and I’m a homeowner. Crazy how some games catch up with you.’
- MagicBlaster: ‘That’s great. I’ve really been trying unsuccessfully every few years to get this game to run in a Java emulator so I could play it again. It works great, pure nostalgia straight to the brain! Why didn’t id [Software] release it?’
