A couple tells us how they met in the MMORPG: “Of course, the biggest problem was the distance”

MMORPGs and online games are a place where millions of people meet and get to know each other every day. We at MeinMMO have spoken to a couple who met in World of Warcraft.

While quests, raids, and PvP undoubtedly represent the core content of MMORPGs, it is the social interactions and playing together that make this content something special. Many of us made good friends online, with whom we played in a guild and sometimes met outside the game, like a Star Citizen guild from Austria.

You get to know each other through shared activities, talk regularly in voice chats, and have fun together. Thanks to the shared hobby, there are also tons of conversation topics, and it rarely gets boring. And sometimes, it happens that two people fall in love and even end up getting married.

We at MeinMMO spoke with such a couple from World of Warcraft.

“It was something as banal as: ‘Cool name’.”

MeinMMO: Hello you two! Briefly tell our readers who you are and what you do.

Cloudakera: Hi, I am Cloudakera! I am 33 years old and originally from Hamburg. I am a trained merchant for insurance and finance and still work in an office professionally. I’ve been a passionate gamer since my childhood. SNES and Super Mario World got everything rolling. You wouldn’t believe it, but I played football for years and still go to the gym regularly. A healthy appearance is very important to me.

Aimedis: Hi there, I am Aimedis and I am 29 years old. I live by the beautiful Lake Constance and studied business administration there. I am currently working in the family business. I am a passionate bookworm and a big Harry Potter fan – my naming in WoW is thanks to Cloudakera having contacted me at all (laughs).

MeinMMO: How did each of you get into WoW?

Cloudakera: I started back in “Wrath of the Lich King” (Blood Elf Paladin) on a private server and loved the expansion. But then I switched to the official servers for Cataclysm and explored the Alliance side with my Worgen warrior.

Aimedis: My sister used to play WoW Classic with her boyfriend, and I was so fascinated by it that I was allowed to create a character. At some point, I played so often on her PC that I created my own account. So I’ve been playing since Classic and haven’t missed an expansion.

MeinMMO: How did you meet?

Cloudakera: It happened in 2012. I was balancing on the rooftops in World of Warcraft in Stormwind with my Worgen warrior and observing the guild chat a bit. I was relatively new to the guild, and since I am quite shy, I never write anything in the guild chat or whisper to unfamiliar players.

But then I noticed the player name Hedwig in our guild chat. Since I am a huge Harry Potter fan myself, I quickly messaged the person. It was something as banal as: “Cool name”.

Hedwig (Gnome Rogue) replied nicely, and then we continued chatting for hours. When it came time to say goodbye, we briefly confirmed friend requests, and then we were offline.

Hedwig is the name of the snowy owl in Harry Potter, introduced in the first book (Philosopher’s Stone). Hagrid gave it to Harry for his 11th birthday. She brings Harry his mail and is also his loyal companion and friend.

The next morning, I logged in again, and this time I was directly messaged by the person. We chatted for hours again and then exchanged phone numbers at goodbye.

Over WhatsApp, we learned that we couldn’t be further apart. I in Northern Germany and she in the South (about 800 km).

MeinMMO: What did your typical day in WoW look like?

Joint Answer: We did dailies together and farmed equipment through dungeons and LFR. Of course, always together in TS or Discord. Nowadays, we know each other so well that we understand each other without words when leveling our twinks together.

“The biggest problem was, of course, the distance”

MeinMMO: How long did it take before you decided to meet for the first time in real life?

Joint Answer: We met in-game in the summer of 2012, and the first real meeting took place in the summer of 2014 in Berlin. It happened that we were both in Berlin at that time. I, Cloudakera, was there for work, and my wife was there on vacation for the weekend.

MeinMMO: What were the biggest difficulties you had to overcome in the relationship?

Joint Answer: The biggest problem was, of course, the distance and also the thought of where this should lead and how (or especially where) a shared future could look like. After all, we both had our lives and our families in completely different places.

MeinMMO: What tips do you have for gaming couples in long-distance relationships or those who met in online games?

Joint Answer: Take the leap, meet up, and take some risks! This is definitely easier said than done, but we are beyond happy that we took the risk and couldn’t have done better.

MeinMMO: Is there anything else you would like to say to our readers in the end?

Be nice to each other! Try to let players make mistakes too. Especially new or inexperienced players are often bullied or kicked out of groups. This zero-tolerance for mistakes in MMORPGs is getting worse and ruining many games. After all, we all play for a reason: to have fun! Also say something nice, and who knows, maybe you’ll meet your soulmate.

We sincerely thank Aimedis and Cloudakera for the conversation and wish them all the best in their marriage.
